the club sandwich in brew brothers is lovely. bit expensive but lovely

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭shaka

Brew brothers last week, food is nice but very over priced.

Said we would try Russells on Saturday, never a fan but sister in law regularly goes there so we said we would give it a go again - jeez it was worse than I remember, zero flavour in the burger which was advertised as burgers. Chips were cold. Wifes was tasteless too..

Russells is really poor imo. It is the epitome of these gastropub/superpub hybrids that sprung up all over the country during the celtic tiger. It doesn't specialise in anything...pints are ****e, and food isn't much better.

Clohessy's, Smyth's, Colllins' and many of the other suburban pubs fall into that category too, I think.

Would definitely agree there. I know these places do well (since they survived the recession and all that), but I don't have much time for them really. I like Bobby Byrnes as it is a self-styled gastropub - it has an identity you could say, and is not trying to be everything in one. The likes of Russells, Collins', etc are trying to grab too much of the market imo. Sports bar, casual pub-grub, family-friendly eating. This approach clearly works, just isn't for me!

I agree completely. Scotts was another dull souless pub.

It can be done right however. Mcgettigans is well run and compliments the adjoined Limerick City Hotel.

Alot of it is down to badly run establishments. Smyth's is dire. Couldn't compare it to likes of Soho in Cork

McGettigans run well? I don't think so, in fact quite the opposite. Bar staff like headless chickens, very poorly trained. Very hit and miss on the food and the clientele leave a lot to be desired.

If you look past the flash interior, it is a bit of a kip.

What do people think of bambu beside Texas steak out? Was there again last weekend, early bird menu superb as usual.

Wouldn't have a bad word to say about Bambu.

Their €10 lunch deal is incredible value, considering both the quality and quantity of the food you receive. Service is very good too, in my experience.

It may not even be in the top three Thai places in the city centre, but given the quality of those above it on the list, that's no slight.

I haven't been there in yonks, last time (Celtic Tiger times) I thought it was far too expensive for what we got.

I go frequently and its always jammed. It's probably the most kid friendly restaurant in limerick. It's nice and spacious with lovely views. I don't think it's that expensive at all.

Have to say, I like Milano also, the pizza is tasty & for any coeliacs out there there are gluten free pizza options, dominoes also do gluten free pizza but don't always have the gf bases all the time & their gf pizza are quite small, Milano's are bigger

In Khing Thai tonight. Service was excellent but it was basically empty at the time. Very nice food at a decent price.

Anyone notice how the sweet potato fries in The Buttery are always fairly over-cooked (i.e. burned)?

Has anyone been to the cafe in The Hunt Museum recently? Any opinions?

Is it still run/owned by the people who used to own The Dolmen ?

Thought it was always run by Helen O'Donnell, wife of former Fine Gael TD, Tom O'Donnell? She's also one of the main organisers of the Limerick Tidy Towns thing. Where's The Dolmen?

The Dolmen was over Papu - the Polish Supermarket by Arthurs Quay Park. It closed YEARS ago!

Helen O'Donnell ran the Dolmen, she now runs the Hunt restaurant which is supposed to be lovely

Never knew they was a cafe
Is it proper or just to get tourists

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,903 ✭✭✭zulutango

It would be one of the better cafés in Limerick, in my opinion.

In my opinion it's the best cafe in Limerick. The food is excellent, staff are friendly and so is the setting looking out over the river. The artwork is all for sale and changes regularly which makes the place a bit more interesting. It's run by Helen O'Donnell who was of The Dolmen and also does catering through Dolmen Catering.

Oh the Dolmen was amazing - i have such great memories of going there as a child with my mom and getting a big salad and brown bread. They had salt grinders on the table and i was fascinated with them! I can taste the bread now - yum!

I will have to pop into the Hunt Cafe now!
