Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Schmeichel was a bargain, as was Denis Irwin. And we'll never forget the summer of Kleberson, Djemba x 2 and Liam Miller.

Best signing: ahh........its a close one between Cantona and Keane for me, but there have been so many that could go close! Schmeichel,Irwin,Bruce,Ronaldo,RVN,Rio, etc....

Worst signing: again, there are many....Veron was probably the most expensive mistake...although i feel he is harshly treated by critics

to be fair i guess i should list a few other ones like i did with the best

Djembax2, Bellion, Kleberson, Taibi,Ralph Milne, Prunier, Guiliano Maiorana, Poborsky!

i reckon he must be number one..

    best: ashley young
worst: steve sidwell (purely based on his shocking contribution of ogs, red cards and penos given away. i fully expect he wont be in this list if hes still at us in a year tho)

    Best/worst in one: Diego Forlan

I know he's neither, but a great player whose form was awful and only did well after he left United. ><

Luzhny and Grimandi were average enough players, certainly not bad enough to be included in as possibles for a worst signing ever category. As for Reyes, I don't know what you're thinking there. Granted the kid never really got to grips with the EPL but he was a decent player and we still got a few euro's for him.

Stepanov's and Cygan were atrocious alright but they cost buttons, something like £500,000 and £1.5mil respectively. Richard Wright was quite unlucky with injury and the fact that one of the great gk's of recent memory just kept going. Certainly you'd have to chalk him down as a waste of £6million though.

Which brings us to Frannie Jeffers, I merely restate all Kirnsy said about goals-appearences-value etc. I feel at the time Wenger bowed to media and outside pressure to start signing English players. The same standard Jeffers or Wright on the continent at the time would have been half the price.

Frannie Jeffers was definitely a worse signing than all of those, and I'd have Reyes nowhere near that list.

Depends on how you define 'worst signing'. In the context of the team maybe but certainly not in terms of what he did for the club with regard to their exposure in China.

Much like Ji Sung Park he was partly signed to help tap into a niche market. Luckily Park is quite good so it was a winner there. Dong was pretty crap but he sold shirts and played on tours over there.

Great bit of marketing as they probably made any fee they paid back in shirt sales and then some.

  • Registered Users Posts: 256 ✭✭LarWright

    Best: Reina
    Worst: Kromkamp

(I can think of a more bad signings than good ones!)

Dong gets a lot of crap about being Chinese, people forget he was indeed part of a find the best Chinese player to sign thing. At the same time though, watching him in the reserves he looked like he had all the natural abilities to make it, got real good pace and an eye for goal. He just never stepped up in any way, but when you hear Fergie talk about him, it sounds like he was disappointed in him.

    As for Fergie,

    best?
    Ole

    Worst?
    Taili

    fair enough
IMO they mostly were pretty bad but not £8m was spent on any of them (thank god!).

we even made a bit of money back on Reyes who went on to score the league winning goal at Real on loan.

and as for the roll eyes, that was directed at jeffers general ****eness than yourself.

er, at milan the manager doesnt sign players but galiani does so from him id say...

Best: KaKa or Shevchenko (from Kiev not Chelsea).

Worst: Pancaro/Vieri/Rivaldo/Jose Maria/Javi Moreno/Sam Della Bona/Vitaly Kutuzov... the list goes on...

    Arsene Wenger for Arsenal;

    Best:
Henry - granted he wasn't particularly cheap but he became our greatest ever player
Fabregas - cost nearly nothing and became world class
Vieira - cheap and became the backbone of our greatest team

    Worst:
Jeffers - put Wenger off signing English players for a few years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,046 ✭✭✭eZe^

Fabregas? That was more of a robbery really.

Best : Henry, no doubt in my mind, not just for his contribution on the field but played a part in the whole Emirates move imo. I will always feel welet himgo too early and I never bought into the "he was holding back the kids"

Worst: Jeffers, just wasn't up to it imo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 787 ✭✭✭bUILDERtHEbOB

Best: Reina, he was relatively cheap and is one of the best keepers in the world now.

Worst: Difficult to find a player we lost a lot of money on, bar Keane obviously, but we may only make a total £2-3m loss on him in the end which isn't too bad all things considered, Babel maybe but he's still quite young, maybe Dossena but I still think he needs more time, Morientes?

  • Registered Users Posts: 479 ✭✭SWAR

Best: Torres - paid a lot for him but he's worth at least double that now.

Worst: Oh boy, there has been quite a few...Dossena looking pretty bad, Nunez, Gonzalez, Paletta, Kromkamp etc

dunne has provided the goods for city tho, sidwell has not bar a handful of semi decent performances and a couple of goals. hes cost us more games and points than any single player should in his villa career

    best: cantona, Keane.

Worst: Veron (seemed like the missing link...what happened?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,206 ✭✭✭gustavo

Best signing by Cookie would probably be Mauro Almeida or maybe Richie Ryan

    Worst Patrick Jennings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,001 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Best signings: Givet and Diouf.

    Worst signings: None.
