Interesting topic. Skin of Evil is actually a good episode imo from the first season, minus the cheesy farewell speech by Tasha, bit strange that she only talked to the main cast, including Wesley, wouldn't she have fraternized with other members of the crew?

This episode was good because it explored the question of what evil is, what compels people to do evil things by detailing the personality of Armus, who is essentially evil due to the actions of his race. Picard is the man when he beams down. Excellent character development as we see him giving a philosophical treatise on the nature of evil, not being divisible to any one individual but to the net effect of peoples actions or lack thereof in relation to the actions of others, which takes in a lot of human history imo. Hes also fairly calm when dealing with Armus showing us that he knows he's dealing in effect with a non entity ie a petty alien creature consumed by his own self torment.

The episode also rocked as the crew gets their asses kicked. There is definitely an atmosphere of tension, because Yar dies, which is unthinkable as she is a main cast member and then Riker gets sucked into the black goo. Therefore it stands above many of the first season episodes in that its serious, scary and has well developed themes. The only problem is the funeral scene, bringing it back to the season 1 style of complete non nonsensical corniness.
