Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My 1st serious composition C&C

I found an interesting spot yesterday, so I grabbed the oppertunity to try a serious composition. I took a few photos, slightly different angles (but there wasn't much room to move as I was standing on mossy/slippery rocks !), I processed this one late last nite. I had my old Pentax 28mm lens with a polarizer & ND X8 filter on. I then waited for a burst of sunshine to give the shot the 'x-factor'. So....opinions/improvements/suggestions most welcome ! ;)

I'm not an expert but i really really like it, it is wonderfully composed and i'd like to see you try obtain a better angle because i'd say you'd be hard set. For me what really sets it off is the framing which is done naturally by the top left tree and by the rocks in the bottom right. The lighting is great, the water was effect of shutter speed on the rushing water is nice, not unbelievable like some photos tend to be. Nice selection of colours also. That's my two cents anyway.

Thanks for sharing the photo with us.

From a purely lay perspective I really like it. Love how sharp and 3 dimensional it looks. Well done :)

Thats very nice indeed, you've got the exposure and processing bang on the water looks perfect.
If I had to make a suggestion I'd look at cloning/cropping the rock in the bottom left corner, and I probably would have moved the twig and leaves on the rocks.

    Lovely shot well done.

I really like it, great spot and great shot..Maybe its just me but does it need to be straightened slightly.I find myself tilting my head looking at it.

Thanks folks, all suggestions taken on board, especially the orientation, I think it might be off alright, I'll put that down to 'late nite processing' !!

Great stuff Morriseeeeeeee. I really like it. The first thing i thought was that the composition was really good, which is what you wanted. Good use of the polariser and ND filters to get the shot u wanted.

How long was the exposure? I feel that it could maybe be a bit longer myself.

I agree with the comments about the slight rotation and with the removal of the stick before taking the picture. You probably didnt even notice it when you were there.

    How long was the exposure?
0.8seconds. I have different exposures, but this one seemed the best (at 1st glance) at giving a little shadow & enought light to the scene.
the removal of the stick before taking the picture. You probably didnt even notice it
I saw it but would have risked life & limb (& the camera) if I attempted to remove it !! I had already removed 2 other 'sticks' and nearly slipped in
I will be better prepared next time, ie. wellingtons or diving gear !
Edit: just to add that the tripod (fairly standard) was balancing on a few (slippery & not-horizontal) rocks, so everytime I pressed the shutter (even using the 2sec delay) I was waiting for the camera/tripod to topple over. The hardest part was getting back up the bank, especially with the gear, and a snow shower was just about to lash down !
/I now feel like I should be writing an article for National Geographic !

    So....opinions/improvements/suggestions most welcome ! ;)

A really nice image, I like the angle & agree the stick should go (but best wait till your wearing the wellies). I would be very happy with it, if it was mine.

Well done Morisseeeee. Nice shot, perfect natural framing. Really like. Where about's is it?

I drove up a back-road (then turned left, then right, then ....so on) near the Galtee mountains, I'd say if I was to try to get to the same location again, I'd struggle to find it !

again ,, well done ... these shots are hard to capture well .

As an aside with the pentax mount do you have any type of AF confirm? Or is it manual and fingers x

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Or is it manual and fingers
...yep, all manual, not too difficult in this situation as you set up your lens to small aperture & to infinity focus. Having said that I nearly fluxed it up, I set my aperture to F2.8 originally (to see my scene thru the viewfinder, it gets very dark with the filters on !) and took a few test shots, but then the sun went in and only then I realised.........oh sh1t the aperture !
