If your idea of a learning curve involves diving in at the deep end, then the Cannonball run might hold some shades of interest for budding film makers in Dublin. Lining itself up to be the amphetamine fueled X-Factor of off kilter film making, it’s based on Stateside events like the NYC Midnight Run and the Screenwriters’ Challenge that put creatives under pressure cooker conditions to churn out product. With just 24 hours across the last weekend in March to shoot and edit a 3 minute film, the event promises moments of Darwinian natural selection galore with digital meltdowns at the edit stage and scrambles for locations and cast at the start. The Cannon Ball Run crew will be documenting it all for a fly on the wall special to appear on DCTV a month after the event. Think you’re up for it?

    WHY WOULD I BOTHER?

As if emerging unscathed wasn’t enough, the winner will receive a tidy 1000e in equipment vouchers to be used at their will courtesy of Filmbase. And because there are never losers in this sort of thing, all the material turned in by participants will get an airing on Dublin Community Television.

    WHO’S THE COMPETITION OPEN TO?

The competition is open to all student and young film makers, and to be honest, basically anyone without access to funding for their production regardless of age.

    HOW DO I ENTER?

Entrants can apply via email to cannonballrun@dctv.ie or use the contact form on our site. We’ll be interviewing the people that want to take part on the evening of March 25th in the Digital Hub. So contact us as soon as possible to register your interest.

    WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

The concept of Cannonball has come about as a mechanism to show young and independent film makers in Dublin that there are outlets for their work such as Dublin Community TV open to them and resources available through institutions like Filmbase. Later this spring DCTV will schedule a season covering student and low-budget independent film making in Ireland. Meanwhile located in the heart of Templebar, Filmbase is an organization facilitating training & development, equipment and edit suite hire, as well as information services for low budget film makers.

    SCREENINGS AND WRAP PARTY

The screenings will take place in 4 Dame Lane from 8pm on the night of March 29th. The films will be followed by a swift awards presentation and then the night will slide into sets from DJ’s coached in a versatility that moves across the spectrum.

    WHAT ARE THE RULES?

    1. Crews will need to be available for interview in the Digital Depot in the evening of March 25th.
    2. Selected crews will have to meet at 12.30pm on SATURDAY 28th March for casting.

    6. Editing is to take place in Dublin Business School from 6am Sunday 29th March, where FINAL CUT PRO (which version?) software will be available. If you wish to use a different editing package that’s acceptable but you must be able to cut onsite at DBS.

    7. Teams must have an a producer to keep in contact with the CANNONBALL RUN team.
    8. Films to be shot in Dublin.
    9. No prerecorded material is to be used, teams will be provided with tapes.

    WHAT IF I’M AN ACTOR?

Great, we’ve a use for you too. We are recruiting a pool of actors to be used as the cast in the shorts. We’ll provide a room where our film makers will be given just moments to choose the number of people they need for their short. You’ll need to make yourself available for all day on March 28th and 29th should you wish to partake. Meet at the Teachers Club at 1230pm on March 28th. SHARP!
