Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Go to http://www.filehippo.com/

    Download CCleaner.

Start - run - msconfig -startup tab - unselect unnecessary programs.

Download malwarebytes antimalware and run a scan. If it picks up much then download and run combofix.

    Defrag your drives if necessary

That should get you started anyway.

you could increase the virtual memory also to 4092mb, and set for best performance not best appearance

    check for malware
are you using a resource hog like Norton ?

try to have about 10-15% free space on the drive

uninstall any crap you will never use again

user procexp to see what is running / using cpu time
use hdtune to verify the drive is ok as drives slow down when dying

it may be time to do a clean install , windows accumulates crap over time and only a heroic effort can truly get it pack to pristine day one speed

Did you get an XP installation disc with your PC?

If so, i highly recommend you start from scratch and return the PC to its former glory!

My PC (Dell Dimension c521) was getting very sluggish and had started stalling frequently. It was slowly driving me mad so yesterday I looked into restoring it to how it was out of the box (before installing hundreds of apps and leaving files all over it).

It's not near as complicated as I thought it'd be. Just back up all your files first. Then format the harddrive and install windows from scratch. I've never done this before and took about a day to do all backing-up, installing, then reinstalling all my programs.

System runs muuuuuuuuuuch faster now! Faster than when i got it even as it doen't have all the useless dell software on it. Was on a roll with it that I even put on a partition and installed Windows 7, so I'm dualbooting Windows 7 and XP Pro. Do it! ;)

EDIT: There are lots of tutorials on doing this online. Also recommend having a second laptop with internet access handy if you need drivers. Or what I did was save the driver for my wireless card on a USB... once I had net access I could get everything else I needed.
