H Dip in Computer Science - good?

I have a business degree but I specialised in MIS in my final year and did Pascal/Delphi Pascal. That was almost 10 years ago and I have been working in an unrelated area since then. Recently I bought a book on C so as to get back into programming again.

Now, I am considering going back to college as I want to get a good qualification in Computer Science. Currently, I am thinking about doing the H Dip in UCD. Does anyone know if it's a decent course?

I would hope to get a job in the programming area (provided the economy picks up of course!) so would the above course provide me with realistic job prospects?

    Thanks!

Very good, includes Programming/Systems Management and Analysis plus the basics of Architecture in 1st year.

I would say having some kind of a qualification would be best. Would you not go for a full degree though? The days where somebody being good with computers means they don't need to have a qualification have come and gone. All those people have moved up the chain so to speak. Too many people in the Irish development industry have gotten away with the 'computer whizz kid' thing and the industry is peppered with untrained sub-standard developers.

I'm not familiar with the course in UCD but they generally have a good name, and a diploma is more likely to get you into that all important first job than not having one. It shows you're capable.

I have to say I may have been lucky as I am still in a job for which I began as work placement/experience for Fetac level 5 networking/IT college course. This seems not to be included some college courses but I think its more practical then doing the exams. Also previously got to work in a vets on another college course and was aslo offered a job at the end...

What kind of shortage do you see? I'm mature student in third year of a programming degree and want to get into Java development when I finish in May 2010... what do you think of the prospects?

    Tks,

My opinion, if you are in Dublin, look for a course in DCU preferably or DIT, not UCD/TCD. DCU/DIT have a good record of producing quality graduates in Computer Science. UCD/TCD would not in my opinion be the best places to study computer science.

I am not trying to start a college war, I am just basing this on CVs I've seen.
