Has there ever been a Vegetarian Society in UCD? Yes, I know there is a Greens Soc but it's far from a type of Veggie Soc... I know that they have one in NUI Galway and it sounds like that's going well.

I'd be really interested to be part of such a society :) Has it ever been attempted? Is there interest?

There was something like it, perhaps an organic society or similar? They even got a vegetable plot going up at horticulture if I recall... died out from natural causes I think (the society, not the vegetables).

Oddly enough, in 4 years this has never occurred to me! And I'm sure I would have noticed if there was one, so I'll go out on a limb and say there hasn't been one for at least 4 years :pac:

What would you see a veggie society doing in UCD, out of interest?

well, if you were a veggie or vegan you would know that getting food on campus can be very difficult. I remember that 5 years ago i went to get soup in the science cafe (now gone) and the CHEF couldn't even tell me what was in it! Plus, things like mayonnaise being in most sandwiches, makes it difficult for someone allergic to eggs or a vegan to find any suitable pre-packaged sandwich. there are plenty of issues and also it would be great to socialise with the many veg*ns in UCD. The NUIG society had some sort of - everyone brings a veg*n dish along, once a month or so, where everyone tries out everyones food - sounds like grat craic :)

Edit: i can't even buy dark chocolate on campus (chocolate with no buttermilk - so don't suggest Bournville)! There are times when a girl (or guy) needs to be able to buy chocolate! ;)

lol! it saves writing the mouthful of "vegans and vegetarians" :) I can't be scaring people off with big long words!

I am a vegetarian! I have to admit I've never found it particularly difficult to find something to eat, no worse than anywhere else that isn't catering specifically for vegetarian diets, and a lot better than some places. Most of it is a bit sub-par, but I reckon that's the food in general, not just the vegetarian options.

That's pretty bad, but I can't say I'm surprised. That place always seemed more like a warehouse than a cafe to me. And the staff always looked depressed.

Hmm, free (and worry-free) food... I'm liking this idea :D

Are you thinking of starting a society?

EDIT: I'm not dismissing your concerns regarding finding vegan food on campus, I just don't have any experience looking for it so I can't comment.

    I'd love a veg society.

I'm a vegetarian but i don't eat eggs, mayonaise, milk etc (no real reason, they just squick me out) so it is fairly hard to find stuff to eat

Aha! Yes, I would be interested in getting a society started, but I wouldn't be up to the challenge alone :) It's just that I only know one other veggie in my deparment (chemistry)... I always presumed there were plenty out there. 'Tis good to hear from you guys!

I am vegan and do find it difficult to order food anywhere. And I work with someone who is allergic to eggs and she finds it awkward when our little science shop only has sandwiches with mayonnaise left in the fridge. Something so simple as having some bikkies (e.g. hobnobs) that I can munch on while others enjoy their marshmallow or chocolate coated bikkies at a conference is just a small thing that makes a difference. Doing post grad work you find yourself at regular conferences and their is generally finger food provided. (Am am glad to say I was delighted to see hobnobs at a talk I went to in Trinity yesterday :D)

Oh yes, one thing as simple as providing soya milk in whichever coffee places would be pretty cool. Again, I have heard that this is available in the coffe place in NUIG. Lactose intollerant people and vegans would appreciate. And I am sure that there must be a few of these about the place :)

So it wouldn't be just veggies, but vegans and people with various intollerences that I'd be interested in having a society for. As exciting as that sounds ;)

Plus, I love to cook, so this idea of a sort of food gathering sounds brill.

It does sound like a good idea, but...

Unfortunately I'm not the man you're looking for. In 2 weeks time my course is moving into hospitals and I'm gonna be a rare sight around Belfield.

But if you get one going I'll be signing up for the free food! :D

Did you emails ucdgreens about it? I think i got your email.

I'd love to see a veggie soc, I know a few vegans and veggies in UCD, I'm a veggie myself. The one in NUIG seems great, they have a 'Bring your own platter' night i believe which sounds fun. It would be a great way to meet other people who have the same dietary requirements as well as being a social outlet.

Yup, that would be me emailing the greens :) Looking forward to discussing it with you.

If there was a sort of "vegan pot-luck" that'd be fun. I'm not any kind of veg*n, but I *do* love cooking, and making decent-tasting veggie meals is always an interesting challenge.

sounds brill :) cooking and eating will be the key to this society :D well, I hope!!

What exactly is the story? Is it gonna be an offshoot of the UCD Greens or what exactly is happening?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,128 ✭✭✭sweet-rasmus

Nope. The Greens Society is and will always be the Greens Society. A Vegetarian Society would be completely different. Things are yet to be discussed.

I'm a vegan and would be very interested in getting involved in such a society.

    I can't fathom a vegetarian society, I'm vegetarian and I wouldn't join such a thing :)
