so you want some one forsay half a day = 4 hours ok we start @ 9am and finish @1pm if your are in dublin he would have to leave his house before 7.30. @ 1pm ,30min for lunch , 1 hour to go home, he cant commit to another client on the same day because he could be delayed at your place so thats why if we are going to do a job we price for the whole day
in electrical work it is never straight forward

  • Registered Users Posts: 419 ✭✭eoghan.geraghty

I would look to get 150 to 200 euro for the half day, depending on the work involved, distance doesn't come into it for me.

Wow, still think it's 2003? There's a lot of electricians out there and not much electrical work. I thought that attitude was a thing of the past

From what I have seen the number of electricians/apprentices doing nixers has gone through the roof. I would guess that this is due to the lack of work available in the construction industry and the prices many charged during "the boom".

I am not going to argue right or wrongs of this, just an observation.

you could get a handy man but if you want it done right get and electrician!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭fishdog

For general work you should get a handyman
Yes I would agree. They are great for general work, but when it comes to electrical work they should not do much beyond changing a light bulb.

Often it is not that hard to connect up lights, sockets etc. and make them work. The problem is that often it is assumed that because something is working it must be safe. Often this is not the case!

It is important to note that if any part of an electrical installation is altered by a "handyman" (even in a small way) the electrical completion certificate for the entire house becomes null and void. You may find than that your insurance company may take a dim view of this in the event of a claim! There is then also a greater chance of a claim.

When working as an electrical contractor I saw some extremely dangerous wiring done by the local handyman (at a good price too Im sure!).

Electricians we may not be perfect and we do make mistakes, but at least we have received 4 years of training and have had to pass accredited exams that are recognised internationally.

you only pay by the hour and no call out charge!
So you save a few euro, but is it really worth the risk?
Why do you think a handyman cant charge the rates that an electrician charges? Perhaps they have not had the training to do this sort of work in a safe manner.

By the way if you want to know if the guy doing electrical work for you is genuinely qualified: All electricians are issued with a photo ID card (free if we apply for it) to prove that we are qualified.

    For general work yes..
For any work that requires a skill NO!!!
Would you let a handy man service your gas boiler just to save a few quid?????
    Some people are so irresponsible!

hey i now this is off topic but im sparking nearly 9 years now and never seen one of these cards. where do you get them?

Fas will give issue it to you for free. They get you to fill out a form and they want to see your senior trades and junior trades certificates.

Supply them with passport photos too!

I got it because I was working abroad and figured that I may require proof that I was qualified. I think all sparkies should get one and prove they are qualified as much as possible. Not much is free nowadays!

if i do a job they pay one our travel and only the hours i ll working for them.
if the job takes 3 hours they will pay for hours x 40=160 eu
If i have nothing to do for the rest of the day thats my problem and not the problem of the consumer

I have one. I got it at the same time that I got my National Craft Certificate. They are both free if you fill out a form (from Fas) and include a copy of your Junior & Senior Trades Certificates.
Ring or email Fas and they will tell you.

I got mine over 15 years ago. Perhaps they don't do them anymore.

Please don't use this thread to look for an electrician to do a job.

we get subbies at 32 euro. I'd expect some one doing a nixer to charge less.

  • Registered Users Posts: 280 ✭✭dave45dave

Ted1 , your been robbed , anyway he was looking for rates 18 months ago. Check dates b4 you post:eek:.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,551 ✭✭✭✭ted1

not really, its a bit specialised what we do, although not that complicated, but is amazing how many people screw it up, so at 32 euro we have subbie who knows exactly what we need, we can send him in 3-4 weeks ahead of us nad be safe in the knowledge that it'll be all right when we turn up. to carry out the remainder of the work.

Wasnt meant to be a smart comment. Its just im a subbie on 26 p/h industrial and commercial work. Still think its a bit high in this day and age.

eh I'd check the calculations if I were you...

As for including commuting times in charge out rates, forget it, you don't work for the civil service... Set out a call out fee plus an hourly rate.

Customer doesn't care where you came from (rightly IMHO).

Time on the job is fair enough.

Had some electrical work done recently. Two fully qualified electricians paid by the hour using certified electrical items from reputable electrical outlet.Paid up no bother except for added charge for certification 250e .surely the certification is built in to the fact that everything / everyone was certified to begin
    Didn't pay the extra charge

Kind of a zombie thread at this stage .

Going to lock it but for the record testing and commissioning is required but still takes time.. it's itemized seperately in nearly every quote for electrical work that's passed under my nose..

It's not built into the costs generally, the guys do the work then test and commsion it. Often another team do it. It's a way of making sure it's done and allows you to get the certs.

You might not be provided with the certs as a result of withholding the payment
