Airline policies on taking extra passengers

Recently when flying home with Aer Lingus during a strike in Budapest airport, we took on board passengers that had been left behind by Ryanair & Malev.
All 3 carriers fly to Dublin within a few hours of each other, with Aer Lingus been the last to leave.
The Huge queues due to the strike caused some passengers to miss their flight.
I was surprised to see Aer Lingus doing this & I'm sure Ryanair would not.
Do airlines have a policy on this or is it at the discretion of the pilot ?

It would be a decision probably by the operations department.

There would be an agreement of sorts between airlines to cover situations like this. Aer lingus may or may not get paid for honouring the tickets of the passengers taken on.However it's a swings and roundabouts situation, and some day the other airline will be in a similar situation.

It can be prudent to pay up even if no agreement exists.

The PR gain from such a situation can be good so even if the airline is never paid there can be some dividend.

The cost to the operating carrier is fairly weak as these passengers would be taken on a seats available basis and the flight is operating anyway.

Hope that answers your question in a small way.
