He could've done one of two things -

1. Come out and punch the ball like he did earlier in the game. The ball was hanging for a long time and dropped pretty much 6/8 yards from goal. Prime area for a goalkeeper.

or

2. Stay on his line and rely on his 6ft 5ins frame or whatever it is and massive reach to deal with a header at goal.

As it was he half came then went backwards, leaving himself completely flatfooted and powerless to do anything.

Poor judgement.
