    Presume they're talking about this:

Schools to close as teachers vote to strike

Schools throughout the country will be closed on 24 November, after teachers voted in favour of industrial action against cutbacks.
The result of the ballots was announced by the three main teacher unions today.
A fourth union has already received a mandate for action.

The result means all schools, primary and second-level, as well as further education and third level colleges, will close on the day.
In a joint statement, the primary and second-level teaching unions said they were taking action because members had never before faced such a threat to pay, pensions and terms and conditions.
They say they fully recognise the serious national problem but want more of an emphasis on taxation as well as cuts.
This means the country's 65,000 teachers will withdraw their labour on 24 November and schools will have to close.
Second-level teachers voted 77% in favour of strike, primary schools teachers by 79%.
Third level teachers have already given their union a mandate.
In response, the Minister for Education said in a statement that industrial action will not address the country's financial difficulties.
Batt O'Keeffe called on teachers to pull together in the national interest.

Ah Dermo, I know that. Sure they weren't even allowed march on the 24/7 Alliance demo. Its unfortunate that its the Godesses', but I don't think the state should expect the lads to work for free.

The positive development this time is the statement that was released earlier in the year saying how they did not want to be used as substitute labour for striking emergency services. I think with that being out there, the reaction will be a lot different to in 1988 (Where there was frequent run ins between the FB and the DF)

The DF are getting a woeful deal, i didn't mean "get them out" as a slight to them, but rather that the state can not seriously expect the FB to work for free. There's no division between the two jobs in terms of workers, but if one have stated publically that they do not *want* to provide substitute labour but have to, and one refuse to work, they wont be viewed as 'strike breakers' IMO.

Even knowing there could be Goddesses on the street, the FB gave a massive cheer on Wednesday when the DF were mentioned from the stage by their (FB) rep saying that there were another group of workers excluded from the march and that their families are taking a hit too.

Its going to be ugly, thats the only guarantee!

Sorry bout my rant earlier, wasnt really directed at you, more so the general public who have no idea or understandingof what the DF is for, the public tend to be a little blind to the work they do.

    Peace out!!!

I know nothing of any strike action.

Can someone tell me WTF is going on?

    All there.

Siptu and IFUT represent our lecturers, but I think its likely other workers on campus will be out too (The people in the library, Mandate or Impact as far as I recall?) bringing the place to a standstill.

Knowing ICTU, who do not have a pair of manbits at all, its likely they'll "do a March 30th" (the last planned one day strike) and pull the rug on this one 3 or 4 days before it.

I'm going to try chuck something together in so far as a poster or leaflet encouraging students to support the unions on the day. This is a big step for the public sector.

    .
I highly doubt that. Not with the budget only a few weeks away. This strike will definitely go ahead imo.

Only so many ballots ICTU can ignore :pac:

I wonder what the reaction from students will be to it all...

Not that I know of, but it would be kinda cool to have one :) I'm sure you could start one up if there was enough interest? Us reading nerds need a place to hang :D

Actually now that I think of it maybe the Literary & Debating soc have one? I'm not a member so I don't really know....

Hmmm...maybe they do but I dunno if I would enjoy serious stuff...I am Psych student so any reading I do, outside of the gizillion pages of schtuff, is likely to be low thought , high-enjoyment. Not the Maeve Binchy esque stuff like...*runs away.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

To be fair, I'd hardly call anything by Maeve Binchy high thought :D

    /literature snobbery

I get what you mean about reading stuff that's enjoyable though. I do english so we've to read loads, but you do need that bit of crap, easy reading. It's like the reading version of chocolate :pac: I find Ross O'Carroll Kelly books are good for that lol

Yeah, exactly, I'm talking about the amazon.co.uk bookclub list or Oprah's (god forbid). Enjoyable stuff that's fun to discuss that kind of thing... Interesting *strokes imaginary beard

Yep, Lit branch have a monthly book club. First book was Metamorphosis by Kafka and the book this month is The Stranger by Camus. I think they meet on thursdays at 7pm (not sure where exactly....) I'm a member but haven't been to any meetings yet. Damn appeal of alcohol and girls!

Kafka and Camus. Indeed the definition of light reading :D

And also, whyyyyy must sleep deprive me? God damn having to get up early on a Sunday morning, it's actually not right :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 Awooga

Ha ! My definition of light reading has now become anything less than 900 pages = LIGHT!

Sundays are so borrrrrrrring: there's FECK ALL on television, I couldn't be arsed getting dressed properly (like dressed human enough to leave the house) and my translation assignment won't sound fluent, I am annoyed.

    Bleh.

Just in the door now, THE SPECIALS was probably the best gig I've been to yet. Delighted I got to see them. I'd seen individual members, but the (almost) entire package is something else.

    Too much too young, rudeboy!

I've come to accept you could set a carbomb off outside the JH and most students would just walk in the back door. I don't think we'll have our Universate Populair in a hurry, but even two dozen students joining the lecturers for an hour or two will look fantastic. The media will try present the strike as being hugely inconvenient/ annoying everyone else.

I presume the Young Workers' party (sp) will be supporting the strike? Are you invovled, privateye? Where abouts are they congregating???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,283 ✭✭✭PrivateEye

:pac: Not a member of the SP (Socialist Party)

Without going all Peoples Front Of Jedua, not my scene at all.

I'll bring it up at the Bertie meeting tomorrow if theres half decent attendance. Otherwise, I'll ring up IFUT and run it by them, sure they wont mind, in fact- I'm sure they'd be chuffed. Us low paid craply treated private sector student workers will add some young faces if nothing else! Unity and all that innit.

Room was packed at the Bertie meeting, nice to see it wasn't all lefty trainspotters either. That b0llocks is in for a rough ride out here me thinks. If you see me, with a petition tomorrow, sign it and go "Ah, its yer man from boards.ie"

That's too subtle for my liking. More like a loud "Ah jaysus it's PrivateEye! i know you from the interwebbbbbbz"
