Have you being over to the richer-sounds forum here in the Biz section?

And @the aviator WHAT?!!!! Logitech speakers better then a real Surround sound?!

If you want a "real" surround sound setup you spend money!
You buy seperates, that amp has the proper decoders its a proper amp. Its a proper surround sound system, the speakers are ok nothing great but they are easily upgraded with more expensive ones, depends on room size etc

You'll probably need speaker cable too noodler remember.
Set this up right and it'll be good.

Your obviously just an idiot who pays the wrong price for everything! I have a ''real surround sound set up'' . I bet you my Logitech Z-5500 system is superior to your system in every way! They have ''THX'' '' Dolby digital '' Dolby digital Pro Logic 2'' '' and DTS surround'' certifications. Note ( The THX cert is what they use for Cinemas,THX is mainly a quality assurance system. THX-certified speakers provide a high-quality, predictable playback environment to ensure that any film soundtrack mixed in THX will sound as near as possible to the intentions of the mixing engineer, which really means its the best you can get! I bet your system is not THX certified is it?????!!!!

They pump out over a 1010 watts of pure power! what power has your like 10 watts???? It has optical , coaxial, 6 channel direct , Stereo, and 3.5mm inputs! which means i can basically connect anything to the system including PS3, PC's Xbox 360, TV, I pod ,and more !

I bet my Sub-woofer is about 100 times larger and more powerful than yours! It can literally propagate such noise throughout my house!!!

Plus the system looks completely animal! look it up on you tube buddy.

So get your facts right before you start mentioning anything like that to me again!

    logitechz-5500.jpg
Here is a THX certified home cinema!
    home-cinema-installers-logo.jpg

PS. If your going argue back, I suggest posting a picture of your system and its specifications! and we will see what a ''Real surround sound system'' is like!!!???

Wo-wo back up there, attack the post not the person! Calling me an idiot, little unfair don't you think.

Tell you what im not going to go comparing penis sizes with you.

I don't have a major surround sound system as my apartment wouldn't really allow it, well id be disturbing the neighbours, i have a yamaha sound projector, which for the sitting room size is perfect.

But as an audio-phile and a person who works within the sound business i know for a fact separates are better then one piece boxes and im sorry but logitech IMO don't cut it.
Im well aware of THX and all the other certifications and what they are.

Nice cinema you have there im sorry i don't have a house to house such a set up but if i did i wouldn't be cheaping out to a system that is not created by a real sound company.

I was merely saying that you can't really compare the two systems as one is a real system which is separates which if you wanted you can upgrade speakers, you could put in 32 band EQ to take advantage of listening to music or for a particular room.

Your logictech systems amp goes it all has to be replaced, a proper system you'd replace the part that has gone.

The sound maybe good out of the system but you pay for what you get.

You want a ferrari you don't buy a toyota and put a body kit on sure it may look like a ferrari but it will never be a ferrari.
You pay for what you get.

    .....

The post above could be nominated for post of the year........... but for all the wrong reasons! :D

The Z-5500 is fine as a casual setup but as pointed out above a good seperates system is always the better option to go for.

Let's all keep this gentlemanly and civil lads.

Keep in mind you're discussing speakers. It's not exactly a hot topic akin to discussing the war in Afghanistan.

WOW! What a post - I heard of console fanboys but now Logitech ones.

Cabrwab - whats wrong with the Onkyo speakers I linked you to?

Nothing is wrong with them id say with the onkyo speakers they are good, just i have seen on AVforums that they need alot of turning up!
Id say for the money there extremly good.

I just meant that you may want to upgrade them after awhile to different set. Because that amp will handle it!

You do know as a boardsie you'll probably get a discount off richer sounds if there feeling nice. Found them very good to deal with.

Its over rated by audiophiles TBH.

You could easily live without espeically for games IMO.

It makes it better but its not like its a requirement like HD almost is for gaming at this stage just to read the menu systems lol.

I'd buy one but don't go nuts on prices or you'll expect more than it can deliver. At the end of the day, its just better sound. If it matters that much to you get it, if not ...

Thanks for the advice. I would probably get an all-in-one pack if I could find one that did HD Audio for a price cheaper than the speakers and amp listed above.

Its obviously mostly for Blu Ray since most games are just DD anyway tbman.

I got this system about 2 months ago.
    Onkyo 5.1
Its hooked up to my PS3 via Optical for sound, 360 via component and my UPC box via optical. Its HDMI throughput so I only have one cable going form the receiver to the TV.
Its amazing the sound is great and it makes a huge difference when playing games.
Personally I reckon its worth spending the money for a good system as its not the kind of thing you will buy every other year.
Check bluray.com forum for advice on which systems are suited depending on the price range and usage.

Sorry if this is way off topic ....

I've got a sony 6.1 receiver and I'm thinking of replacing the speaker cable with 80 strand cable.
I've read on various sites that good cable can improve sound ,even on lower end systems like mine.
Anyone know if it's worth it?

    I can get a 100metre roll for €40

Its nice looking but no HD audio which is what I am after.

I used to use a surround setup, a dirt cheap one from argos. and the back speakers stopped working. Yeah you get what you pay for.

It was good for a few games, mainly 1st person ones, and movies, but I couldn't justify the expense again, so I planned to get a 2.1 system and tried a logitech one. It was crap.

Then I picked up a hi-fi, hooked up to the aux input, and it's way better, great bassiness, great for movies. It's not surround or anyhitng, but it doesn't even have a woofer and it was way better than the logitech 2.1 with one.

Still surround does add to games a fair bit, especially as it becomes more important to the people making them and they implement it better, it's really atmospheric. I'd say it makes resi 5 amazing. I know the original halo just isn't the same anymore without it, although my hi-fi has made it better than just the tv, with only a tv you just get no bass, everythings too treble-y

    Just my 2c anyway

Noodler don't get too hung up on the HD audio support being built into the amp,2 points to remember,
    1. It really only makes a noticeable difference if you have a 7.1 speaker set up.
    2. If your using your PS3 as the player you can set it to decode the HD audio formats and output to your amp/receiver via LPCM which is supportes by almost all AV receivers. Theres a good explanation of how to here http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/dts-hd-to-lpcm-and-ps3-how-i-did-it-t367798.html

Hold on a second, Your the one who starts infuriating my Logitech Z-5500 system. And you dont even have a system of your own to back up your point of what a ''real surround sound system is''!!!???? . My speakers were not cheap at all by the way, they started out at an RRP of over 600 USD!!! i paid just under 300 Euro for them and i had as you say ''got what i paid for''!! And by saying '' lol Logitech just dont cut it'' really shows you know nothing about them! They are a recent electronics company established 1981. and are already nearly dominating the computer peripheral industry with a very wide product portfolio! The Logitech Z-5500 System are very very very powerfull award winning speakers with an array of capabilities! They are a ''Best buy'' in my opinion!

My Logitech Z-5500 system sounds just as good as any of the Brands such as Bose, Yamaha, Harmon Kardon, and even the over priced Bang and Olufsen. I
only use the Logitech system in my bedroom with my Xbox 360, PS3 , Computer , Ipods etc... Its built for that kind of use! However if you do have the money for Brands such as the above thats fine!!! but this thread is for PS3 users looking the buy a 5.1 surround sound system, I just recommend the Logitech Z-5500 System that outputs 1010 Watts Peak power! With all the certifications you want including THX , Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital , DTS What more could you need???

    FinalFront1680corrected.jpg

And by the way the saying is actually '' you get what you pay for'' not ''you pay for what you get'' which is not always the case !

AND WATCH THE VIDEO ON THE LINK, GO TO IMAGE GALLERY AND PLAY THE VIDEO , IT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE PURE POWER OF THE SYSTEM ENJOY!!!!

Oh I do indeed have my own surround sound system. I agree the Logitechs are quite good, for what they are. But, they will always just be a set of 'computer speakers'. They will never be as good/flexible as a decent seperates setup.

OK you have a subwoofer, so does a good seperates setup. You have 5 satellite speakers, so does a good seperates setup. Now look at the control panel for the Z-5500s and look at a seperates amp. The quality of sound is affected massively by what's in an amplifer, the electronics.

A good amp uses some serious electronics and needs to be cooled by large heatsinks to do a good job. You simply can't compare the control panel of the Z-5500s and a good amplifer.

To add to the thread, let it be known that my Samsung 40" 1080P LCD tv (6 series) is my source of sound, except when I plug in my beautiful Sennheiser 555 headphones. Does me a good job, too.

I see the value in expensive systems but if you're buying an expensive system, buy one. Don't half do it with a Logitech system from PC World. It looks impressive but usually can be out-done very easily, and actually for not much more money either. The second hand market for proper sound systems is a buyers market, and worth tawling if you're looking for good stuff!

...though it's hard not to walk past the Band & Olufsen store and not buy something :D

Would a pair of quality headphones be able to do a decent job of simulating surround? I don't really have space for a proper system, so I'd be tempted to invest in a high end pair of headphones. Preferably wireless. Any recommendations for a specific set?

I have a pair of sony Dr-S3 headphones at the moment which are great, but I'd prefer a wireless set up for gaming, plus they're pretty old at this stage

Aviator they are dead right about computer speakers they are not up to a standard of separates.
What matters at the end of the day is if they work for you but there is no point in arguing about them being better than something which would cost four times that.

For instance I may go out and buy a set of Edifier 2.1 speakers for my system, they are probably better than most other computer brands but at the end of the day i know they're not as good as high end stuff on the market, but i just want a little set of speakers for under €200. As he said you get what you pay for. I wouldn't go for Logitech, but if the owner of a set likes them then why does it matter.

At the end of the day sound is a very personal thing. What sounds amazing to one would be horrible to another. Its very subjective, it can depend on the shape and size of a room as well how well the sound works. I could spend 3 grand on speakers, someone else could believe they sound horrible.

For me i will never use speakers for games 2.1, 5.1 or otherwise. Ill always stick to a good set of Audio Technica or high end Sennheisers headphones. Its all about preference, its pointless argument. There is always something better available than what you own in all manners of product.

Edit: Ooh i got in there late. Just noticed something hilarious, did he say he was flying planes at 3 years old?

Virtual surround sound works fairly well through headphones but you'd need a system that supported outputting to it as far as I know.

It probably wouldn't be as good as a dedicated system but it will let you know where the sounds are coming from in games. Probably best for pc gaming though as I don't know how you'd get it to work on consoles unless the headphones did the work which would probably get expensive.

Software on Pc available to do this (some came with my laptop) and it worked ok for watching Back to the Future but not as good as my surround sound system partly due to just wearing headphones for long periods being irritating IMO.

It worked with my Sennheiser headphones without any problems so I don't think you need special headphones but obviously good quality ones would sound better anyway.

Not much of a pc gamer so I'll stick with what I have I guess. Cheers for that, appreciate it

On the subject of surround headphones theyre fairly awful. I have a set of Sennheiser ones i bought of curiosity. For surround they were a waste of €150 good otherwise.
I think if you want surround you would be better off with one of those little USB receiver thingys with Dolby Headphone. The usual surround headphones try to go with multiple drivers within the casing and it just doesnt work well.

I had a TV that came with it built it and I could never tell if it was on or not lol.

I didn't even know if there was an option, I don't so. looked through the menu system and never found it.

I thinks its a bit of a con on many devices. You can modify signals so they sound like they are coming behind you etc... I think if it exists properly anywhere its on Pc as you'd have the processing power for free to do the calculations.
