I wonder did you download the installer to your desktop and it's the icon for the installer your are clicking on instead of the shortcut to the software itself?
An easy way to tell this is instead of double clicking on the icon for iTunes on the desktop, click on the Start button and go to All Programs, then go to iTunes and click on the iTunes icon there. If the program loads, happy days, if not come back to me.

    Sorry it re-installed again.
Could it be i installed it wrong the first time round...

Yeah, something probably went wrong with the initial installation alright. Best bet is to remove it completely by going to Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and try reinstalling again from scratch.

Thanks i'll give that a shot.

Also, I have inadvertently downloaded the 64-bit version in the past.

Might be worth checking you have the correct version.

Im trying the new one on the site, i think its the 8.1 model.

Also i dont want iTune to be my default player, but that shouldnt interfere with the installing the way it has should it?

Yes, but there is a version 8.1 for regular Windows XP and a version 8.1 for 64-bit Windows.

The latter is chosen by default on the Apple Download website. Make sure you are selecting the second option (Windows XP or Vista).

You were very lucky this time.
Al O'Peica normally doesn't know what he's talking about.

Hope my front garden is done or I'm site banning you.

It is, but it beats being perpetually drunk.

I've decided I have no clue what you mean by that scurrilous remark.

    Sorry Silverfish.
    Tom's fault.
I believe, if you wish, this thread can be locked now due to a solution being found.
And, erm... I'll just back out slowly..
