Thanks to barrabus and ryan for suggesting and organising this thing, and to jimm for the photos. Great atmosphere this evening.

Second that. Thanks guys, that was a fun way to spend an evening. I didn't get home till after 10 :) Tactical coffee stop in Roger's.

Well done all. I'll be at round 2 :).

Good man! You been out on many of the weekend spins? Planning on doing the league this year?

Thanks guys, that was a fun way to spend an evening.

Agree, it was a great way to spend a Tuesday evening. My legs are tired today but the cycle in this morning was so nice, its practicly like summer out there.

Much to my shame, I haven't been on any yet. Although I want to start going to the racers spin. Defo doing the league. Yourself?

Every Saturday morning until a couple of weeks ago, when the racing started to take over so I do my own thing on Saturdays. You should definitely head along, the pace isn't even that strong but it's deffo something worth doing.

Lumen- does your HR get more lumpy if you decrease the smoothing factor? It always seems remarkably consistent

Nope, with no smoothing it looks like this:

I imagine this is a good thing.

I have no idea! I was pacing myself on power, but it was quite difficult given the bumpiness of the road - lots of small gradient changes. Looking forward to seeing Ryan's for comparison.

I didn't really know how I would feel for the TT. I did the Des Hanlon at the weekend (Average HR 166 for 4 hours, 328W Normalised for the 4 hours!). Riding up from town, my HR barely went above 140 (my Threshold HR is around 180).

The plan for the climb was go out hard for the first 20 seconds, ease off once up to speed on the flat section and push harder on all steep sections. I mostly stuck to that but I don't think I went hard enough for the first 7/8 minutes – the last minute I was pushing pretty hard (490W for last minute).

Given how calm the night was (perfect perfect conditions – well, we could have had a tail wind but I'll take calm), I probably could have broken 9 minutes, again, with good legs. But still 9:26 is almost 2 minutes faster than the last time I went up it.

Anyway – here is the graph – no smoothing.

10:12 for myself. Pleased with that. Sorry about the drool, there was no time to clean myself up on that last corner.

Ryan, you will have to give us some tips to approaching TTs like that one. It's the first I've ever done so experience is sorely lacking on my part.

I tried to go hard on the flat bit at the start to get the speed up, but not too hard, then not go into the red on the first ramp then push the pace once over that. I found I wasn't able to push myself as hard as I know I can go on the long ramp just over the river. For the last few corners I think I was going all out. I know it's easy afterwards to say that I could have gone harder... but I honestly think there was more in the tank. I wasn't as smashed as I may have looked crossing the line.

I'll have to go incognito :)

Actually, on the Kippure TT I made the mistake of crossing into the gravel section while standing near the second last corner. The damn rear wheel started slipping, which probably lost me... oh I dunno, about 47 seconds ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 885 ✭✭✭ryan_sherlock

lol - I almost crashed at the end of the first flat section. That big pothole, was moving over to the other lane and the little stones caused a lot of sideways movement... Wouldn't that have been embarassing!

Would have been nice to lug the camera and tripod to the top to get more photos, but didn't really think it through.

Bit dark too, so had to bump the ISO up

Some pretty good pictures there. Nice to put a face to some of the names.

I drove past some of you on Military Road as you were heading up.
That was me in the white golf doing the 'how's she cutting' finger flick off the steering wheel.

So we still don't have a time from niceonetom?

Not that it's likely to affect my ranking or anything.
