Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Howdy

I recently bought an item from adverts. The person I bought it from was outside the EU at the time and shipped it to me from there. It got stopped in customs though and I now have a letter requesting an invoice or paypal receipt before they will release it to me.

I paid for the item direct into the persons Irish bank account but I did it over the phone so I do not have any physical receipt for this. Also, the item was second hand. Do I still have to pay duty and vat on this as well??

    Any advice appreciated. Cheers.

Why not give the customs guys a call and explain the situation to them?

Your bank statement should show the money transaction. As for the duty on it I would contact customs and explain but I would imagine that you will have to pay the duty

The person I bought it from is Irish as well. It just so happened that they were out of the country when I bought the item from them. Surely I can't be penalised for this??

I think it comes down to from where it is being sent.

I'd definetly send them a pm and post in adverts helpdesk unless they said on the advert that it was to be posted from outside the EU

I knew where it was coming from. I just didn't think I would be penalised as it wasn't new and I paid for it in Ireland.

    I'll figure something out. ;)

It's a long time since I dealt with customs on similar matters, My dealings were in commercial/professional goods so my interpetation may be void

IIRC, unless the seller took the item out of the country/eu under carnet then it has been deemed exported and upon re-import is liable for vat/duty. Open to correction though

    Hi there

Firstly anything that is sent from abroad can be considered an import so it is liable to tax. When I got married I got caught for numerous presents from the USA as my wifes family are from there!

You will have to pay the VAT and customs first and then appeal the decision. If the person bought the item in Ireland and can show that it may be possible to get the tax back.

In relation to you your bank can print a copy of the transaction for you.

    NO!

You can not be asked to pay tax on goods purchased from another member state of the EU, unless it is a car (VRT) or alcohol.

my understanding is that you pay the irish VAT on check-out at Amazon. it should be in the T&C's someplace
