Almonds are the uber-nut. Look for them in the baking section of supermarkets like Dunnes or Tesco or Aldi to get the cheap ones. Also good are hazelnuts, brazil nuts (great source of selenium), walnuts, pistashio, pecans etc. Raw and unsalted is best. Peanuts are popular, but not technically a nut, and not as good as the other ones.

Why are peanuts not technically a nut?No vascular bundles?

They are fine. Slightly higher carb than other nuts, but still good nutrition.

    Moved to nutrition and diet....

Don't forget seeds. :) Pumpkin seeds for example are loaded with zinc and magnesium.

I have heard them called nature's Viagra!

My Dad has a total cholesterol of 3.2 but a HDL level of marginally less than 1 (0.91) which I'd like to raise... I've bought him some brazil nuts but what other nut (or food) would help raise his HDL without increasing his total overall cholesterol level?

(3.2 is damn good for a man of 77 I'd have thought too!)
