Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Why is the RTE news ( rte radio) saying Bernard Dunne the boxer is Irish Born as opposed to being Irish? Heard this on two news headlines this morning.
although I am not a boxing fan, i have huge respect for Dunne. What a great little philosopher he is.

He was born in Ireland as opposed to just boxing for Ireland and being from another country.

You assume RTE have some standard style guide in the newsroom as opposed to making it up as they go along.

Not a week goes by where I don't hear some little anomoly on RTE, just a few weeks ago the 'Ulster Hall' in belfast was being reopened after extensive conservation/restoration work, the RTE news reader stated that "After many years work, and many thousands of pounds spent, the shutters were finally coming down on the Ulster Hall" :)

True, but most usually make it clear which country they say they're from - and we've also had granny-rule'rs for the olympics amateur boxing in the past and theres quite a few people who can't tell the difference!

But I think the general rule in reporting is: Don't confuse the reader or listener. If you throw in something like 'Irish-born' it implies that his allegiance is to another nation....

As used in this context - where Dunne was born in Ireland, lives here, pays his taxes here, and raises his family here - it's just a nonsense affectation.

ridiculous to describe Andy Lee as a 'granny-ruler'. His parents are both Irish and he has lived in Ireland since his early teens.
