I think people with the rarer blood types should give blood if they can. As far as I know there is always a lack of the blood group that's universal. I went to give blood twice but I couldn't manage a full pint on either occasion. I nearly passed out. I won't be going back again. I'm terrified of needles.

I have to agree the whole I don't like needles is a pretty bad excuse,if you don't want to do it don't do it but don't blame it on needles, turns out very few people actually like them.

I am pretty small thing and the first time i gave blood I fainted like 3 times but I'll give again.
It's pretty rewarding knowing you could have helped someone..it is just laying about in your veins not doing much you can spare some!:P

Note you get free taytos and a pen as well if you ask what more enticement do you need people!

It matters little how rare your blood type is. If a blood type is very rare, it will be needed very rarely. If a blood type is very common, it will be needed very often.

What a pussy. Id say the person who could have done with your blood did worse than nearly pass out.

I wonder how many of these "terrified of needles" people have tattoos?

I've been giving blood since I was 18 and my father has given well over 100 pints. They do give free beer afterwards, and biscuits, and biros, and car stickers.....

I bet if the IBTS started offering cash incentives, many of the scaredy cats/lazy lumps would be suddenly wanting to help their fellow man

I'm 0 - ,which I thought could be given to people with different blood types.
    Which is handy in emergencies.

    I could be wrong though.

Sorry you're right. I was being over simplistic about it.

A lot of people who hear you have ABm7sus4Rh+AlphaTournamentEdition will go "Ooooo! That's a really rare type. You should really give blood." That's what I was talking about.

Fair enough. How long does a bag of blood stay fresh for though?

I know for a fact you never gave blood Mr. Macho. I tried anyway and they told me I might as well not go back.

This may not be a problem for much longer:

British scientists 'to create synthetic blood from embryonic stem cells'
British scientists are planning a ground-breaking research project to create synthetic human blood from embryonic stem cells, it has been disclosed.
The results could provide an unlimited supply of blood for emergency transfusions free of the risk of infection.

I'm not allowed to donate because I lived in the UK for 11 years. I'd like to say that I would donate if I was allowed to, but it's pretty easy to say that when you can't.

There is a table showing what blood type is compatible with what, on wikipedia.

I was told I can't give blood because I had jaundice as a baby.

If your friend won't take no for an answer maybe you could tell your friend a little while lie and say you had jaundice or a blood infection that prevents you from giving blood. It would get him off your back about it.

Did you know that the Blood transfusion service is not a charity?
Did you know that they sell your blood to the hospitals at up to 200 quid a pint?
    Pure profit making organisation.

At 200 a pint ,considering the amount of staff and tests they do on the blood, 200 probably wouldn't cover the costs of running the place.

It's great if they are anyway effecient .

(Members of my family have gold pelican badges.)

I wonder what would happen if I showed up at a hospital with a shopping bag full of my blood. I'd do it if I only thought they'd buy it off me. Cut out the middle man ye know?

Giving blood is easy, don't worry if you think your blood will kill someone, they do tests on the blood before someone else gets it, I have donated 5 times and been turned away twice, because I didn't have a high enough iron level.

I went a couple of months ago for the first time and the chick made a balls of my left arm, missed the vein completely..

Then had a dart at my other arm and eventually got a vein, had shoite bloodflow though and they barely got the pint outta me..

Both my arms were left pretty badly bruised, but feck it, hopefully it helped somebody.

I will try one more time but if there's any more of that messing around and missing veins I won't be back, it wasn't pleasant...

Actually, all those tests have a failure rate, so if you think your blood will kill someone, you shouldn't donate.

That's what I'd be afraid of, every time I have to give blood to the doctor it's always the same way. As soon as the needle goes near me all my vains just disappear from the skin.

Marvellous! no more feeling like I should be donating for me.

I don't know anybody who actually likes needles, or indeed fainting.... But do you hate it so so much that you couldn't make an attempt to overcome it?

I look away when they're putting the needle in, and end up talking non-stop like a gibbering idiot for however long I'm there, to distract myself really.

Give it a try at least ! It aint that bad in all honesty, it's mainly just nerves/worry that get to you

Unfortunately, because of the risk of variant CJD you are unable to give blood.

so could i get my blood tested to see if it is at risk or what? I have never given blood either and i am petrified of needles but i at least want to try...

You lived in the UK as well? Apparently CJD a disease that can lie dormant for many years, which is why we can't give blood.

Why don't they give cool stuff, like ipods or usb keys, might encourage more ppl to donate.
