Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Phantom - Pure Morning

Sorry if this has been on before, but what do people think of the morning show on Phantom lately?
I can't stand it since Sinister Pete has gone, those two muppets who are on now drive me crazy. You might as well be listening to Colm & Jim-Jim, except those two might occassionally say something funny!
They don't even play decent music anymore, only the non-offensive stuff you'd hear on Q102 like Snow Patrol & Bell X1.
This really gets to me, if I wanted to hear two idiots talk total rubbish there's a pile of other shows I could waste time on. Seriously, the other day (after playing Bell X1 AGAIN!) they asked listeners to text in and tell them how they eat their cornettos!
Sorry for the rant, but it seems to me this goes against everything Phantom stands for.

P.S. Apologies for the Dublin-centric thread!

absolutely true - even the traffic station - Dub city FM is playing better music that phantom in the mornings.

Sinister Pete was a refuge from the wall to wall ads on newstalk, now I just go straight to MP3 after hitting ads on two stations.

it seems to me like sinister pete was old-skool phantom, didn't work out (really bad timeslot for him imo) in a more commercial environment and so they went 180 degrees and went too far the other way.

Sounds about the most accurate scenario. I'd reckon the old show was a bit too traditional Phantom for the accountants liking, hence the new show.

That's a bit too "woo! ha ha ha! Wacky us!" Heat magazine dependant for me, but hey, if the accountants nod in approval, then it's staying.

    ...and the listeners are going.

I only listen to the afternoon show on Phantom as I can't stand Tony F***** on Today FM, but I find that there's an awful lot of talking. Yeah like stupid stories about how do you eat your cornetto or some embarassing time you got stuck in a lift. And the music that is played is very 'safe'. Sorry, going off-topic.

Richie and Charlotte have been a disaster in that slot. Inane chatter, reading the days tabloids, unfunny puns. If I wanted that I would listen to the fifteen other stations doing the same thing in that timeslot. And if I hear "Sex on Fire" or White Lies on Phantom one more time I might explode. I've actually taken to listening to Morning Ireland on RTE1 during this timeslot. It's a well produced show, I get my current affairs fix for the day, and the puff pieces are kept to a minimum.

Ha Ha, are you me ? I do the same now, when Sinister Pete was on both myself and wife left the station on from the start of our journey to the end. Now my wife has migrated completely to Q102 in the mornings and as I said I do as above.
Ironically as one of the ads on Phantom a while back was taking the mick out of the exact kind of show that Pure Morning has become. Having said that the rest of the day is fine with me, have no probs apart from last night, stuck the radio on with the intention of snoozing to something mellow but instead tuned into all the talky bits from the afternoon.

Whatever show they have on my way home is no better. A bloke and a girl being "funny". Yesterday the theme of the day was "peoples favourite sports related movies". Why do Phantom think I give a **** what some mongo from clonsilla who texts radio stations thinks about sport related movies?

    Give me strength.

I enjoy heavy traffic and there's various topics they have, it's not too prominent and adds a bit of light relief to the trudge home.

I feel the same, sorry to say it though - I've always been a big phantom fan since the shed days. I even have a framed phantom poster on my wall....

The Morning show, I gave it a chance but it's true. Sorry Richie and Charlotte but it's just too much like bubble gum radio.

The sad fact is that for every 'one of us' that dislikes it two others like it.

Phantoms listenership has grow because it's programming has been intentionally watered down to appeal to more listeners. Unfortunate, but a fact of life :(

edit: Maybe this would be good feedback in the phantom forum.

I'd like to just throw my hat in the ring here.
I used to think Phantom would become a haven to go to when the other stations are ripping the proverbial with their ridiculous attempts at 'banter' etc on some shows.

But that breakfast show is the most irritating thing on the radio as far as I'm concerned. That Richie guy thinks he's far too funny. Even when they play back that 'on Pure Morning this morning' clip during the evening, the few seconds of a sample that I hear really annoys me.

The daily pun-down thing is the worst segment I think I've ever heard, it's like bad student radio. Just using what other people have come up with and going 'wahey look at this one', 'oooh very good', 'what about this one...'. ?!?!?

I still like a lot of the other shows, but it's Newstalk for me from now on. Intelligent shows with good humour all the way...

Well someone in Phantom has certainly read this thread. There was a little dig at us here this morning *waves* Hi Guys!

I don't mind it too much, I tend to flick between it and Lyric in the mornings on my way to work.

Instead of taking a dig at their listeners they might consider doing something about that God awful show. I turn off Phantom in the mornings and actually prefer channel surfing...manually...than listening to that. Music's crap and they're just not funny.

I didn't hear all of it as I was in the kitchen and the radio was on in the bedroom, but it was supposed to be people leaving messages on the station answering machine. Something along the lines of "I post on boards.ie all the time so I must be right, why are you guys so commercialised now and so unfunny?"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,914 ✭✭✭✭tbh

yeah well, I liked them before they were cool :p (which was when they were really cool)

Meow, saucer of milk please, very petty. But that just shows you the direction the morning show is going, it won't be long now before there's a Knob Nation type of show and prank phone calls.

Still, they do play some pretty good music, just not enough of it like in the Sinister Pete and Clodagh days.

I actually think your man Richie is good, certainly funnier than the gimps on 98FM or 104. that Pun segment is toe curlingly bad though and the music is still by far and away the best on offer in the morning.

Why does a morning show have to be "funny"? Is it some rule of radio or something? Im a grouchy bastard in the morning, i dont want to listen to lightweight "humour".

Agree, can't stand it. DCity FM in the morning is the best show going. I think Phantom has turned into a commercial bunch of paff.

Richie is ok, he can be quite witty IMO.
The other on might as well be called "Token Bird", her role seems to be to repeat whatever Richie says and pretend she's funny too.

"Phantom pure morning, with Richie and Token"

But its still better than anything spin/104/98/2fm can come up with

The only show worth listening to on Phantom these days is 'Sunday morning coming down' with Pearl. A really great selection of music.

Phantom FM, where did it all go so wrong
