^ Hi jlang, yeah that was me alright.
Really REALLY enjoyed the night, as you say it's flat out for the whole thing, little time to think about pacing. 1st run went well, found myself doing 4.45 pace after the first .2m on the Garmin, eventually slowed to 5.48 for mile 1 (fastest mile I've ever recorded!). Reeled in a good few on the bike, on the straight on the 2nd lap I gave out to some chap from Pulse Tri (are you gonna overtake me or are you just drafting?). I finally got angry and put the foot down to get away from him. T2 went better than T1 (took ages to get onto the bike) and finished the 2nd lap in about 6.20 average pace. 43.07 overall, 5.40 faster than I finished this one last year.
I didn't overtake anyone on the last run, about 10 guys went past me altogether so that's the only real obvious area I need to work on.

Hey christeb, was that you on the yellow tri bike? If so, we were doing a bit of yo-yo'ing on the bike leg. I was the guy on the Felt road bike, black & grey jersey. I passed you on each of the hills only for you to storm past me on the flats! Got into T2 transition just ahead of you in the end.

Good race alright. Agree that variation in route makes transition fairer but the track through the trees is a bit bumpy, have to watch your step. I took about a minute off last months time to come in 42:40 or thereabouts so happy with that, but I guess much of it can be attributed to weather conditions. I switched from my usual conserative race plan and went out fast on first run, and hard on bike, but ran out of steam a bit on run and was passed by 3-4 people, only passing one myself. There's a lesson there somewhere...

    Still good craic.

Nope, not Swords CC. That must have been someone else. Could have been Cadex actually, he was in the middle of all that battle too. He's in Swords but wasn't wearing the kit during the race. He stormed passed me on the 2nd run and no chance of me staying with him!

Sounds like him, there were a couple of words exchanged during the last bike lap so he was in or around our finishing times

Well run on the day and I think the tweaked run out of T2 through the woods was an improvement which worked well reducing the importance of good transition position. I don't know the thinking behind it but having the ladies race start 15 mins later (instead of 5) reduced the congestion on the bike course. Did mean I didn't get as much overtaking practice as last month :(
I too liked the tweaked run out of T2, though, as MadHatter said, it is a rough surface.

I racked close to the dismount point. It was great to have a nice bit of space on the rack. 43:04 for me.
christeb - you must have been in the group that pushed hard over the last km - I remember hearing a cheer for a sprint finish right after I finished.

Enjoyed the event overall, went hard on the first run, arrive at T1 fairly knackered, recovered well on the bike, made up alot of ground coming out of each of the sharp corners, only to lose out to some folks elsewhere on the course. T2 a disaster, ended up having a knot in the lace in the right shoe, costing me over 20 seconds id say. Second run, went too hard to early and flagged in the final 200m. 44:33 overall, so Im chuffed enough with that. 45:08 from May event, slower due to the wet ground at that previous event no doubt.

I don't remember getting any others.
What was the date on the pre-entry file you were looking at? Was it before you entered? The file may not be updated very often.

You can always email the organisers: 2009duathlon@gmail.com

What other peoples personal details did I post? Your post doesnt make sense.

Hi Andrew - you didn't, "DirtyDiesel" replied to you and put up details about a car (I think yours?) including make, colour and a partial registration number. It was reported by another poster as no-one is allowed to post someone elses personal details so I deleted it but left the reason for editing there.

    Apologies for the confusion.

I had to use that e-mail address a while back. You get an automated response every time. Very annoying.

Any word when the results are out? I think I have an idea where I placed (from the pics) but I'd like confirmation

Results were out this morning or yesterday (I can't remember whether I looked yesterday or this morning before heading off to W200!). Actually the file was present earlier in the week, but just as a placeholder and it got the results added.

    File is linked from http://www.dublintri.com/duathlon.html

Hey Madhatter, ChristeB - well done on Wednesday - it was a cracking night for it. Spent a lot of time behind Madhatter (again) and had a quick chat with ChristeB (very fancy bike man!), before getting 2nd breath at end and speeding up. Anyway, was a really beautiful evening for it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't know there was a Boards AC strip, have the jersey for the Cycling. With the different colours, I never spotted it - good to know though. Diary entry for the night below.

03/06/2009 Event: Dublin Duathlon 2. Dist 2.7km run, 13km cycle, 2.7km run. Beautiful evening, still sunny and warm, light breeze. Same course as on 06/05/2009. Hadn't pre-registered so turned up early for this again (about 18:00). While the marshalls were organising themselves, dropped bag and had a warm-up spin around the course. It was clear that today's event would be a fast one if conditions were anything to go by, although there had been some issues (widely reported) between the club and TI that might have affected the numbers and people taking part. I'm not sure if it did affect numbers in the end as the fine weather probably brought out others. After gettting stuff ready and racking the bike, I hung around the transition and chatted to Madhatter and his wife. I also met Bronagh (fellow club member of Clonliffe Harriers AC) and had a chat with her. I didn't know she was a fan of the multi-events but it turns out she does the full triathlons and is lining up for the Wicklow 200 as well! The usual pre-race nerves were bothering me (my ankle is sore, my back is going out in sympathy with my ankle, did I eat enough/ too much, etc., etc.) so I did a few stretches and went for a short warm up run. I didn't do the full lap this time as I was a bit worried that the ankle would worsen but I did get a chance to loosen up at least. More stretching and chatting, it was such a lovely evening and a good atmosphere, there were partners and kids running around, you'd think we'd all gathered for a barbeque. Anyway, the race briefing explained that tonight we'd have a slight change to keep the Transition Area one-way, those running out of Transition would do so by running through the trees before joining the original run route on the second run. I had a run through this to see what it was like and it was a little rough in spots but OK - hopefully no threat to a warmed-up ankle... Like last time, the women's race was kept separate and they were to go 10mins or so after the men.
We lined up and the race got underway with a charge down the football pitch. I got into a pace I knew I could keep but still stretching myself and kept an eye on where some of the other lads were (including Madhatter). It felt like it went well enough and would be faster than the last time I did it (10:03) and so it was as this run took 09:37 to complete. When arrived in Transition, I found the bike easily enough, got helmet and shoes sorted but someone had turned up and put a heavy mountain bike on the far side of the rack which had now fallen and was pinning my bike down! I managed to free it but was cursing the moments lost in the struggle. Anyway, out on the road for what was to be a fairly good ride. Maybe the numbers were down but on the route, there didn't seem to be as much traffic and most of the time I was able to keep my own pace/ chase down others. There was a bit of 'tag' going on among a few of us (including Madhatter) and a guy (ChristeB?) with one of those 'pure' time-trial bikes that don't even have a top-tube (it looked gorgeous, a real speed-machine). The final lap came and we all ran into Transition. I managed the shoe change well enough and followed the others on the run through the woods. As usual, the first bit is getting back control of your legs but gradually, feeling stronger I caught up with the group ahead and went past. I was feeling ok, strong enough but not so confident that if someone challenged I'd hold them off. I speeded up a bit at about 600m out and more toward the end catching another one or two. One chap stopped dead with about 250m to go - I think the poor man was sick. In the end, no challenge came and I finished in 42:19 on my watch (probably a bit more officially). I was just ahead of Madhatter this time so we're even now!
First run: 09:37, don't know time leaving Transition, Bike time: 20:55, Dist: 11.577(?), Max: 50.6km/h, Ave: 33.3km/h, into Transition 31:42 Second run: 10:00, Total 42:19.
    Position 28/ 179 men, 29/ 232 overall (behind 1st woman)

    ^^ Good stuff Cadex.

It's funny though, when I was chatting to my wife beforehand she asked me what I was aiming for and I said "A PB, something sub 43mins". And then she asked what about Cadex, what I thought he was after and I said "To beat me!" :)

I wasn't being cocky thinking that was you're only aim (and I'm sure it wasn't!) but having been so close the last time I reckoned you'd be determined to reverse the places in the second event. You beat me by 20 secs in the end, and I'd say that was the biggest gap between us all night - I think you were stalking me for the most part :p

In fairness though, you put in a cracking 2nd run, went past me with ease and I couldn't respond. The little bit of speed work I was doing has dried up since I switched jobs and it showed that night.

I'm heading off on holidays at end of week. Hope to get some running done, but the bike fitness will suffer in that time. So I'll have to install you as favourite for the 3rd event (assuming you're doing it). No pressure ;)

Ha ha, I remember you passing me on the long downhill straight. The bro got a great pic on me in action. You may even recognise the attire from when you went zooming past!

Yes I think I recall ! The bike really comes into it's own on the downhills, normally get a couple while trying to brake as late as possible at the end!
Looking forward to the next one already, although I'll be doing a half mara on the Sat before and my 18 week DCM plan starts in the meantime. Some bike time on the rest days is called for!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 230 ✭✭Cadex

Ha! Sounds like a challenge! Funny you should have had that conversation. I suppose, the main intention was to get more speed in all the different sections, especially with the better weather. To reverse the placing would have been a bonus – but the weather was better for you too! I’m the same with the speed work stuff too – out along Clontarf at lunch time, not very scientific…
Actually, the way things worked out the May event was that I was ‘in contact’ with you for the first run and the bike but you increased the gap on the second run and I was knacked so couldn’t get closer – fair play.
For the June one, I kept pace with you (though from behind) again during the first run and we played a bit of ‘tag’ on the bike, then you got out just ahead of me on the second run (I swear it was the flippin mountain bike in the rack that slowed me up!). Then you eased away from me for most of that run. I know I gradually felt better during it but I was surprised to find that I was gaining on you. When I finally caught up, I couldn’t look over. I knew I was only just managing and we were a good bit out. I just kept looking ahead and tried to push the pace, listening for the footsteps. I’d no idea if you were with me or not in the end.
Whatever about the July one (no way I’m going to guess how that will work out), the August one looks mad with the extra changes (Formula 1 Duathlon - Distances 2.7km run, 8.5km cycle, 2.7km run, 8.5km cycle, 2.7km run). I’m not sure if I’m here for that but it could be fun - of sorts 8) !
Great to see your wife doing it as well – good when you share interests, eh? Hope she enjoyed it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 403 ✭✭MadHatter

Yeah, my wife enjoyed it. Her aim was to beat 60mins and she did it comfortably. She hasn't committed to doing another just yet though...

I popped into Cycleways today and got myself some triathlon shoes, won't be using them in July as I won't have time to test them out, but should make the 2 run->bike changes in August a little quicker. All I need know is a bike like christeb and I'll be sorted!

BTW...if anyone is looking for tri shoes (or standard cycling shoes for that matter), Cycleways is selling off Northwave shoes @35% discount. Good shoes for people with wide feet. They still have a few sizes left.

I was planning to go back to toe clips for the August race because it is only 1 lap for each cycle but it would be 4 shoe changes if I stuck with clipless.

ill be doing as normal in august. I see it more as a transition practice session rather than a race for me.

2 laps for each cycle, no?
    Formula 1 Duathlon - Distances 2.7km run, 8.5km cycle, 2.7km run, 8.5km cycle, 2.7km run

I was originally thinking the same, but having bought the tri shoes I may as well wear them now.

Last time I changed my pedals I ended up needing a new crankset (and me an engineer!) so I'm going to stick with the cleats but I do think this is round about where the payoff isn't there any more.
