Right then, this could be considered highly controversial and somewhat unpatriotic and all that. Am I the only person here failing to understand the massive hype surrounding The Script.

I find them to be so placid and uninvolving. Something about them is just really drab and turns my stomach.

    Agreed.

They bring absolutely nothing new to the table. Just blah!

The only reason they won those Meteor award/s is because they wanted someone besides the usual nominees to win.

    they're ok

They are horrifically overplayed. Breakeven is the single most generic song ever to be played anywhere.

They're nothing more than a grown-up version of McFly if you ask me. Pure manufactured pop. Lead singer failed as a boyband singer - now he's back as a, eh, umm... well boyband singer in my opinion.

And why feel unpatriotic when they desperately want to give the impression they're American??! Have you not seen any of their videos?

They were created and marketed to make someone money - end of story.

For the record I'm not a fan, but they're better than mcfly

The sound of **** hitting the water in a toilet bowl is better than mcfly...

If ye are saying the Script don't write their own music and are just making money for someone else, then ye are a long way from comparing them to McFly, who do happen to write their own music and have gone independent so are making money only for themselves.
I do agree with the comment that the Script are trying to be American, such a pity really.

I quite like both bands though.

    They're Irish?

    I can't stand them personally.

Just because their nothing you haven't heard before isn't a reason not to like them. I think their songs are really well written.

No you are not alone! They are just ok and that's about it. Way too much hype surrounds them.

I'll open by saying I like the album & have seen them live once & was more than impressed with their performance. As it turn out I met Marc Sheehan (guitar) once at a party given by a mutual friend before the script was formed.
Lead singer failed as a boyband singer

The band you're referring to were called mytown & were signed by Universal for $15m back in 1998, each member of the band walked away with a considerable amount of cash as they wrote most of the album themselves, hardly a failure.

Marc Sheehan & Danny O'Donoghue spent a lot of time stateside in their own recording studio working with the likes of the neptunes, writing & producing for a lot of big American acts who wouldn't necessarily be well known here.

They were created and marketed to make someone money - end of story.

Is that not any reason to have a band & release an album ? Considering they write their own material, play it themselves & produce their own album I think they're doing rather well.

They've sold over 600,000 albums in a time of declining album sales, they've had a soft launch in the US (album not out there yet but they're doing pre-launch publicity), indications are that they will chart on first release. They're touring the far east shortly.

I have to say, it seems typical (of Ireland) that they don't get the respect they deserve as working musicians. Lot of sour grapes in here.

    they are crap

OP, I'm totally with you on this one. They suck balls. As someone said before in another thread, they're westlife with a drummer.

Just because music is popular doesnt make it good.
The No.1's weve had in the last 15 years, some would make your skin crawl
    Including the script...

What does "trying to be American mean"?

And what should they be trying to be?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,543 ✭✭✭JerryHandbag

"Trying to be American" is something that The Thrills specialised in, and thankfully they seem to have fallen off the face of the earth.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,625 ✭✭✭✭BaZmO*

    Doesn't answer the question though.

I wish I liked them, considering the Irish thing - but I dont, the songs are soo boring.

i can't remember who said it, but the script are the most american sounding irish band since the thrills.

Interesting level of begrudgery on this thread.....

Are "The Script" amazingly innovative and groundbreaking ? No.

Are they aimed at charting and sales ? Definitely. And in that context, are they infinitely better than most of the stuff in the current top 30 ? Absolutely!

They write their own stuff and play their own instruments, for a start.

And bearing in mind what usually manages to make the charts & sell albums (x-factor rubbish, crap covers of 80s tracks, boy "bands" that wouldn't know one end of an instrument from the other) you'd have to admit that they're the best of the niche they're aiming at - so fair play to them!

So personally : above average, one of the few chart acts that I'd go to see at a gig, an actual "band" with instruments, and original material (plus, their current track is miles better than U2's rubbish "get on your boots").......

it's agreed , sure you get one or two dissenters who have a crush on the lead singer but thats expected

Why would you like a band just because they are Irish?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I'm confused - are you disagreeing that I'm a dissenter or attempting some childish, inaccurate and pathetic slur at my sexuality ?

If that's what passes for discussion about musical tastes then I give up! :P

It's a pathetic slur to suggest someone's interests lie elsewhere ? homophobe much ?
