No not at first but like Sega Channel, OnLive itself will drive the market for improving the infrastructure.

Sega Channel didn't really drive anything as far as I know.
Please fix me if I am wrong

    Taken from my previous link,
To provide Sega Channel, a cable company would need to install new equipment into their headend, integrate service authorization into their sales center, and purchase the game adapters. Game adapters were manufactured by Scientific-Atlanta and General Instrument, with a cost to the cable operators of approximately $100 per unit. Additionally, many cable operators had to clean their broadcast signal in the head-end and all the way to "the pole" to ensure that the signal could be received. Sega, a gaming company, thus played a major role in improving infrastructure for future digital cable services, as well as broadband Internet access and digital telephone services. At its peak, Sega Channel was available to one-third of the United States and had 250,000 subscribers.
The data rate for game downloads was 6mbit/s and games downloaded in less than 1 minute. In 1994.

iirc in 2003 i was still trying to do it over eircom's modem connection and downloading a 2mb SNES Rom took me about 3 hours.

You do know that you can access the US beta via a US VPN. Now, the quality of the VPN you use will vary but some of the more advanced premium VPN's you can sub up to for a month at a time are top class, top speeds and very low latencies. If you still have probs, set your region in the time app to Eastern US (you can then change the time manually to your local here) to bypass that usual double check (silly one imo).

I got in to the US beta but haven't bothered with it at all, I do think it's a great step in the right direction though.

Ah memories, downloading ROM's over dial-up. These day's people pirate full PC games as the norm, imagine that 15 years ago :D

Some reviews I've seen on YouTube have been pretty good, but then that's the US, where 'normal' internet speeds trample our 'good' speeds.

Nonetheless the required internet specs for OnLive don't look that demanding..hm, will need to play before I say anything else.

I would guess it had a contention ratio of 1:1, unlike what most of us use in the real world :(

Like my 30mb connection on which I have seen contention once or twice? This is perfect for high population densitys with good infrastrucure. So if you live down the country with a 1mb line, tough ****. But even Ireland is starting to get usable speeds for this service, citys in England have it and don't even get me started on the Scandinavian 100mb lines. There is a market for this espically if they can get hosting in the centre of the citys in which they are selling to.

I'm wondering who this service is targeted to.

Hardcore gamers - they already have the hardware (PC, X360/PS3) to run the games they want
Casual gamers - why would they pay "up to $60" for a game?

They probably wouldn't. Which is why the other part of the model that you've ignored is the low end opt-in, via subscription or 3-day pay to play plans.

You wanna know another great thing about this? If it really takes off, it'll be the end to Download Caps.

If you do not respond within this time period, your email invitation will expire, and you will lose your opportunity to participate in this offer.
    3. Start using the OnLive Game Service. The monthly Service Fee will be waived for the first twelve (12) months after you activate your Account on the Service. During this twelve (12) month period, you will have access to the Service which includes access to free demos and community features, such as member Profiles, Friending, Chat, Spectating and Brag Clip™ videos.

If you take no action at all, your Account automatically will be Suspended at the end of the free twelve (12) month membership as set forth in the Terms of Service. I still can't quite figure out what problem OnLive is trying to solve.

The last Xbox I bought, when I immediately traded back the games bundled back, cost about 180 net, that was for an elite with disk.

    So a 'real' console:
    • You own it (as a standalone device)
    • Can play offline.
    • Costs 180, but really that's about the price of *4* new release games
    • Other uses - media player - DVD player - (bluray for more expensive PS3)
    • Can 'share'/borrow games with friends, 2nd hand market, gamesenders etc.
    • HD/SD - it's all the same to the console.
    • Lag (possibly?) in MP SP experience should be perfect.

    Onlive
    • You don't own it - if you stop paying them and it (and any games bought for it) is useless.
    • You need the internet on all the time - no internet = no games - If my internet is ropey some evening then no gaming - if I'm downloading something - no gaming.
    • Basic cost of 15 per month - if that's pretty much the cost of an Xbox *every year*
    • Not a media player - can't play AVIs, DVDs etc.
    • You're completely at the mercy of their pricing, game availability etc. No swapping games, 2nd hand etc
    • HD uses serious bandwith - for example 5Mbs for Onlive HD would allow someone on a 50Gb cap play about 50 minutes per day (assuming you use all your allowance just for gaming - no downloading at all).
    • Lag in everything.

    So what am I missing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Great post there man. I don't think anyone expected OnLive to be working perfectly and amazingly right out of the gate, I think OnLive is just setting the infrastructure in place. A few years down the road, when there are more subscribers, and internet isn't as ropey as today, it will be a serious contender. They'll also need to drop the price of games, which will happen because it will fail if it doesn't. They'll also need to bag more exclusive games. Imagine saying, "play Mario, God of War and Gears 3 in one night, with one console!" It'd be much more inviting.

Maybe a subscription + "netflix" style account where you can play a game for as long as you want, just one at a time would be better for them. Anyway, a better pricing model and fixing the bugs will improve this immensely. Not today, but maybe 2014.

Also, internet isn't as crappy in America as it is here! Don't we have something like the 5th worst broadband service in the world? (I read something like that)

Not at all, in fact I still have the mouse, its used on the kids pc and I can feel very slight mouse lag even browsing. I've read of pc gamers who played SF4 on pc then tried it on console said they noticed huge input lag on wireless controller compared to a usb controller, their combo moves just didn't work.
    Ok,

    Ok,

I aplogize. I am in a home right now where they have a dell wireless mouse. its got about half a second of lag to it, its woeful.

Now I stand by the logitech mouse: theres virtually nothing on this in terms of lag. nothing noticeable.

    Brand matters tbh

This is the kind of technological development that could put an end to video gaming piracy in one fell swoop but I don't know if that would be a good thing if it allowed the major game studios to completely monopolize the game industry. I'm kind of liking all the little indie game that are coming out on steam so I'd hate to see them ever get muscled out.

The whole idea of cloud computing makes me uncomfortable anyway. Having the lion's share of the processing done remotely along with date storage too maybe while making computing potentially much less costly for the end user would not be a favorable trade off if the people running the show were not about providing to the end user's interests to the full extent.
