    Alright lads,

Need some advice, was thinking of building a computer to use as a HTPC/Home media server and would like it to act as a firewall for my home network. I'm grand with the hardware side of things but I'm looking for advice on the OS choice and software for this.

I was thinking of Vista with the media crap but was thinking would windows home server be any better. I'm going to use this in the living room for watching movies etc. I get Operating systems for free off work so cost is not an issue.

Also what is a good piece of firewall software for this purpose? and lastly will i be able to stream my sky digital connection to other pc's in the house using apporpriate software and what might this software be?

I'm completely open to linux and long walks on the beach;)

    Thanks,

    req

Have a look at http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Main_Page if your open to Linux. That with an iptables firewall and you're sorted. Getting it all to work though with no exposure to Linux may not be a walk on the beach but will give you a nice warm fuzzy feeling when it does.

Some good guides here and there's also a port for the Xbox too.

Thanks bro much appreciated I've been waiting for someone to respond, I'm really looking for a reason to buy new hardware but want to make a responsible choice before I do.

How's linux with tv tuner cards, alot of people online are saying that windows is better at detecting tv cards and optimizing them for use with sky i.e providing sky epg's and functionality in media centre
