hey,

i am setting up a securiry camera system that i can access live via the web.
i have to connect to DVR to the internet via the ethernret cable..

now the manual says i must enter my IP address into this box but the prob is if i go on to whatsmyip.com it says my IP is 84.203.xx.xxx,
but if i log on to the same wireless network with my iphone and then go into the menu on my phone to get info on the network im connected to, it says my ip address is 192.167.x.x

why do i get to different addresses and which one do i use? thanks:confused:

You need your public IP address with is the 84.203.xx.xx address but if you have DSL Broadband, this is going to change as least every 24 hours. Who's your Broadband provider?

Ah well as far as I know, they use static IP's (for a very long time at least). Put when you want to view it, go to http://84.203.00.00:xxxx where xxxx is the port you are using for it.

crap sorry, im using my home network(NTL) just to test it out and figure out how to set it up...but it will be used on a smart telecom broadband connection, so is this any different? cheers

also, sorry, i know very little when it comes to computers, but whats do u mean by 'the port u are using for it''

in the manual it says if entering your ip address as is doesnt work, then it says to enter it in the format http://xx.xxx.xx.xx:888

does that make any sence to you?

    thanks again

Ah, well for only €5 a month you can get a Static IP with them (look at the bottom of the following list):

    http://www.smarttelecom.ie/residential_package.html

Then you would visit your IP address with the port 888 at the end like you posted (e.g http://84.203.12.34:888)

    cheers.

is this the only option? id rather not have to pay the extra as business is slow enough now without the extra costs..

can i just use the other ip address 192.xxx.x.x?

if not then what? i have to keep updating the box everytime the ip address changes?

The 192.168.xxx.xxx is an internal address so you could only use that in a home network.

I have DSL and to cope with my changing IP address, I use a site and program called no-ip.org.

A little program runs in the background checking every 30 mintues what your current IP address is and updates a public domain address you can customise e.g. http://cojomo2.no-ip.org/

This way, you put that address in the address bar with the port include and it will automatically go to your constantly update public IP address (DHCP to Static IP): http://cojomo2.no-ip.org:888

    http://www.no-ip.com/

    Here's a guide for you: http://forums.hopzone.net/f74/noip-dynamic-ip-guide-174/

Nothing will happen if you type in the IP address on it's own... applications and ports need to be up and running in order to access them. E.g http://84.203.12.34:80 might access your router page if it's configured for remote access (with port 80). That's what the ports are there for, to access specifically what you want. It's very handy, e.g you could have 80 for your router, 1000 for uTorrent, 2000 for your Security Camera and 3000 for your VNC Client.

ok thanks. so how do u assign port numbers to specefic things?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭cpu-dude

It's in the program's options (depending on what it is):

    uTorrent

    ut21.jpg

    Real VNC

    RealVNC-4.1.-2_3.png

    Router Remote Management (Netgear)

    great. appreciate that.

soat the mo, my missus has the dvr hooked up to the net at home, and cameras hooked up to the dvr.

in the menu in the dvr it automatically shows the ip address as the 192.xxx.x.x, so is this what i need to do:

    1. change that ip to the other 1 (84.202.xx.xxx)
    2. assume the the default port is 888 as it mentions using that in the manual.
    3. enter the ip address in my url bar in the format http://84.202.xx.xxx:888

    edit: that didnt work!ahh crap..

and then i should be able to view the camera?

or am i just talking thru my arse?

No no, there should be no need to actually change the IP address in the settings, there should be a setting to allow it to be access publically (via the Public IP and port). Example being below in VNC, accepting connections on this port:

    realvnc.gif

Just go to http://84.202.xx.xxx:888 and that should be it. If it doesn't work, you may have to open the port 888 on your router to allow access to the camera.

ok cool, that didnt work, so if u have the time and (patience!) , how do i open port 888 on my router?

i have a wireless router but am not using it at i use the ethernet cable to connect the net to the DVR. There is a small litle blue ntl box tho, i understood this was the modem..unless its some sort of router also im not sure..

Just follow this guide to open the port for the Netgear - just put in 888 instead of 3389 (as in the guide).

ok man, thanks so much for your help, ill try sort this out when i get home.

    last q,

this dvr has to be connected via an ethernet cable, which means its going to hog the net and i wont be able to use it for surfing, so i was thinking, if i plugged one of those xbox wireless things into the back of the dvr, could i then share the connection via a wireless router so i could surf the net at the same time as the dvr being online? cheers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭cpu-dude

It won't hog the bandwidth and if it's going through the wireless, it won't make any difference either. It should be configurable to how much bandwidth it does use (most likely by video quality etc.) so don't worry about that.
