Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I just bought a medium format bronica off ebay last night and I need some ideas on what kind of film to get.

So far I have the guy I bought it from said hes favorites were Fuji Velvia(color) & Kodak Tri X(B&W) Then from reading from a skateboarding photography site ive gotten Kodak Portra 400 & Ilford HP5!

Ive flickr'd all these and they all look really nice. Im just going ask around! I know there should be a few people on here that know alot more than me!

Saw that on Twitter last night! Well done on the purchase!

I'm quite a fan of the Ilford range - Just buy a few single rolls and see what you like yourself. Go for some 1600 and 3200....

Colour, give slides a go, you'll get fantastic big negs off them.

If you're in the mood to splash out on some slow film, my out and out fave is the Rollei Pan 25 (Can also be gotten under the name Maco afaik).

Actually, on a more negative note, using 120 in Waterford can be a pain in the arse, with the majority of places charging the highest rates you'll find. If you're shooting B&W, it's going to be easiest to develop it yourself.

If our mutual friend who works in the place on Arundel Sq. can't do the colour 120 for you, give me a PM. ;)

Its possible that everyone you ask will probably have their own, strongly held opinions on this :-)

I shoot kodak for colour negative, portra 800/160 and now ektar 100 in 35mm, haven't tried it in 120 yet. I shoot fuji in transparency, mostly Provia 400x but with some Velvia 100 (not f) thrown in and trying a couple of rolls of Astia at the moment for portrait stuff. In B&W mostly Tri-x but but also a soupcon of ilford 3200 here, seasoned with a dash of some neopan 1600 there and maybe a light dressing of some t-max ...

Sitting in my fridge at the moment is a 5 roll pro-pack of neopan 400 that I got from 7dayshop for cheap, they still have that at the moment for £6.69, dated april '09.

Also, as Fajitas points out above, learning to dev your own is invaluable.

Yeah I actually bought the camera cause Ive wanted one for ages and finally got the balls to get one last night! Then I was like oh crap can I even get that developed here in Waterford?

I'm really interested in getting the negatives done and just scanning them onto the computer? Its possible to just get the negs developed in town?

Whats slow film now and then slides? I can buy the chemicals and stuff I need to develop itself here in town or should I go online!? That is something I really want to do as well!

Thanks though I knew you would know something haha! Its only a shame though I wont have the camera for awhile im heading off to barcelona on saturday, would have been cool to have it for that!

    EDIT:

Slow film is low iso, fast film is high iso. Slides film is positive, so you're getting a positive image on your neg.

You can probably get more of the bits and bobs of Hennebry's, but it'll be cheaper online.

Everyplace in Waterford will want to send your BW negs off to get developed, but you might be able to get the 120 developed if it's colour negative.

You cant get 120mm B&W developed in Ireland I've tried (that was before I bought my own chemicals & did them myself), I have a roll of 120mm colour at home which needs to be developed...

You could ask someone in WIT who is studying Art to give you a quick demo on the B&W it's so easy to do.

    Eh?

That's not true, there's plenty of places that do it, even if it's sent off, it's usually sent to Kerry or Dublin to get developed!

and this "you might be able to get the 120 developed if it's colour negative."

    :eek::confused:

Thanks though I really appricieate it! Iim just a n00b at teh filmz :p

My favorite colour print film for people is Fuji NPH 400.

yes the roll to be developed you can choose get prints or not. does that make anymore sense I'm trying to think of an easy way of comparing it to digital.

Well, you're going to be dealing mainly with 3 different types of film, colour negative (You'll find this is more common and easier to get developed), colour positive (Slide film) and black and white negative. They're each developed with a different series of chemicals. The colour negative chemistry is known as C-41 and is the most availible form of developing, it's what all the standard rolls of film go through, E-6 is for slide film, and not as many places will develop it, and B&W developers are ellusive around our parts, more common in Dublin/Cork...

Because they don't have the chem's/facilities to develop in store, the shops around Waterford will send your BW & slide films off to get developed in a lab outside of Waterford! It's the roll itself that they'll want to develop. Chances are you won't be able to get them printed in Waterford either though, unfortunately, but scanning them like you mentioned is the best option!

Not a thing wrong with any of them! I'd probably just go for a single roll of everything at the moment so you have plenty of budget to experiment and see what you like! Some films suit peoples styles much better.

Going through my own, I've just developed a rake of Fuji Acros 100 and Neopan 400, handy because of the Dev times. Don't forget you can push and pull film too, it's something to look up, especially if you like your grainy photographs.

http://www.freestylephoto.biz/index.php is handy, as is 7dayshop

Tbh, I can easily walk to Gunn's, so it's not as bad up here in Dublin.

When is the camera arriving? If I'm down for the weekend, I can run through it with you. If there's some (common) films you like the look of, I can get them in Gunn's and bring them back down the next week.

Yep, Gunn's stock all of what you've mentioned!

Your first time loading/unloading film can be a bit awkward, so I've no problems going through it with you!

Is indeed. All are in Gunn's too, if you wanted me to pick them up - The shipping from freestyle is saucey enough tbh.

Yeah I was going to ask what do you reckon would be cheaper? 2 rolls of each on freestyle is just under $30! Just checked the shipping charges.. $30 again.. ouch!
