The problem is that the cost of smoking doesn't make people stop smoking. They have to want to. I believe there's an excellent book by a guy called Alain Corr (Carr? Not the comedian, anyway, it's a lot older than that) that's quite effective.

How and ever, I do agree that smokers can fe*k off complaining, it's a lifestyle choice, and one that affects other people to boot. So, politely, stop complaining.

As for buying abroad, I go on a lot of business trips to the EU and will buy my other half her fix. In Holland, for example, they're about half the price in the airport for EU travelers. I always get 400, and they last her many weeks (she's about 10-15 a day.)

^^^^ that is the same thing as rising the price on cigs, putting taxes up during a recision is crazy, people will either stop or just start getting them black market. it will just cause more problems.

Allen Carr died of cancer.... that guy got hypnotherapy he's a waster, writes allsorts of self-help self-guide books taping into more of the modern culutres self-obsseseed idea that their are guides to making your life better.. hasnt a clue...
my friend his books and he's after readin bout 3 of them and still reckons they are BS but hoping to find that one-liner, that epiphany to save his life!

Well, I'm just basing it on the fact that it worked for two people I know. Each to his/her own.

I don't smoke other than when I'm on the razz but I despise self righteous non smokers. What about this ASH crowd? Why are they so sad that they want this raise so badly? They're like the kids in school who remind the teacher to give homework.

Only problem with this is the timing with strikes and union talks.
I'm sure there'ld be a lot of cranky bus drivers and union reps who are smokers.... might've been worth holding back on the cig price increase news until after the negotiations were finished.
