    Ok lads, take her handy!

I shouldn't have said "ANYONE" but there's loads of films mentioned that are depressing but don't feature someone suffering from depression.

Like "Marley and Me". I mean come on...

    And Face/off. What the ****?!

And The Champ! Yes it is my personal saddest scene in movie history but IT DOESN'T FEATURE ANYONE WHO'S SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION!

It's a tear jerker but no one is suffering from depression in it.

    Didn't ANYONE read the op?

They're looking for films that feature depressed characters or characters with mental illness, not depressing films.

One flew over the cuckoo's nest is the closest that anyone came.

Found this on a quick search

    On the edge

Cillian Murphy is in it. Got decent enough score on Imdb but I haven't seen it.

Also, not really depression but a good film all the same is Shine starring Geoffrey Rush. Won best film at the Oscars in 1996 I think.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. My fault for the dodgy title though.

But yeah, the films don't necessarily need to be depressing - just ones with interesting characters who are depressed or have a mental illness.

A little bit trite but Woody Allens character in Hannah and her Sisters, Mickey Sachs, plunges into a existential crises fuelled depression which he manages to overcome with the help of
    The Marx Brothers

Life is sweet by Mike Leigh is a great film, in which a teenage girl succumbs to bulimia and paranoia

I recently saw film called Candy with the late Heath Legder in
which he and his girlfriend are heroin addicts it's a really depressing
movie that can be a bit uncomfortable for some people to watch.
It's mainly about addiction but I think it's worth a watch.
If I think of anymore I'll let you know.:P

Pure is also about addiction and depression. It's about a mother who is
a heroin addict her 10 yr old son then goes on to try it very depressing viewing.
Especially the part in which he brings her in a breakfast tray with a rose and a syringe
    full of heroin. Heavy stuff.

And Lastly what about that film About a Boy, in which Toni Collette's character has
depression. I think that's more of a comedy though...

He said that a close relative of his has been diagnosed with depression in his first post.

It's a horrible disease. Nothing to be laughed at.

There's a couple of background characters whose names I can't remember.

The point is that it's more similar to what the OP is looking for than Marley and Me.

Not to be laughed at, but (I think) it can be laughed with. I'm watching Garden State at the moment, which seems to be about a guy who has been on so much Lithium, for so long, that he has no idea whether he's still depressed or not. Or whether he was ever depressed in the first place, because his psychologist father put him on the Lithium in the first place.

The House of Sand and Fog fits the bill perfectly. Jennifer Connelly s character is suffering from serious depression after her husband has left her. Great movie. Well worth the watch

Great film, absolutely hilarious, but there are some serious and rather thought-provoking parts of the film when you consider the extent of her depression and her attempted suicide, especially on the boy...
Donnie Darko is about mental illness....A Beautiful Mind....Revolutionary Road (mightily depressing movie too)....I'm sure there's more but these are the first to mind...

Has anyone recommended, "Jacob's Ladder" yet? You can't get any more depressive than that.

Requiem for a Dream mentioned a million times one of the saddest storys I've ever heard.

Another good one is Boy A, found it randomly but has a great story line and a very sad backstory...

I can't remember the name of the movie but it tore me apart (not an easy task) was famous enough, about a kid in England that made friends with a load of Nazis, goes deeper in with the the way its told, hard to explain!

    Anything made in Canada.

Probably the Pièce de résistance being the truly depressing 'Cube'

+5(?) Requiem For A Dream....it's realy good....and harrowing, and depressing, and entertaining. Do it.

+1 for High Fidelity and Frozen Land, both already mentioned.

Alot of hyperlink films feature leading characters who are pretty unhappy and uneasy about life.

Into the Wild - Christopher McCandless is hardly the happiest chap I've ever taken the time to read a book about, the film presents him in a slightly happier light but I don't think there's any denying he was unhappy to begin with before he went on his excursions.

Also, lead characters with some form of mental illness... How has nobody mentioned Josh Brolin's character in "W." yet? :P

Nobody has suggested Taxi Driver yet? Practically a study of depression and mental illness, great soundtrack (Bernard Herrmann's last before his death), and my favourite movie of all time!

Is he really depressed tho? He seems to just be more of a misanthrope/psychotic in that.

    Martyrs

It's sinister, disturbing and utterly bleak. Don't watch it if you are in any way sensitive.

Most definatly you have to check out 'Running with Scissors'...an amazing film about a whole bunch of people with 'issues'.

Half Nelson is also worth a look.

My OH says everytime i choose a movie it is either Disney/Dreamworks or one of the most depressing films in the world :o

I just started re-watching a film, and only just realised it's a good one for this thread: Secretary. Not entirely, since while the main character starts off with severe depression (including self-harm), and is just out of an institution, it shows how she finds an unusual way to escape from it - or at least manage it in a, well, creative way. :pac:

Ferris Buellers Day Off. Despite being a comedy the Cameron character is clearly suffering from quite serious depression in that movie.

    Mar Adentro http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369702/

The two films are based on true stories and are very depressing indeed. Both are excellent though.
