MINDLESS thugs have devastated the aviary of one of Ireland's best-known pet bird breeders.

John McCarthy was heartbroken yesterday at the devastation caused to his prized canary collection by thieves who stole more than 40 birds and left dozens of others dead or crippled.
Gardai are hunting the thugs who broke into Mr McCarthy's canary centre by his Gurranabraher home in Cork city early yesterday morning.
The thieves made off with an estimated total of 40 birds -- several of whom were females who were hatching eggs.
A number of recently-hatched chicks were also taken -- amid fears that unless they are handled properly and kept warm they will die within days.
But what shocked the respected avian expert most was the brutal manner in which the thugs killed and injured many birds during the robbery.
It is thought that the thieves will now attempt to sell-off the birds.
John McCarthy is one of Ireland's most highly-regarded bird experts and boasts a lifelong fascination with canaries and other species of pet birds.
Gardai are now investigating and have appealed for public information in tracing the thieves.
The public have also been warned to be wary of anyone offering pet birds at discount prices anywhere in the Munster area.

That's rotten. It is a pity too as most canary breeders and showers are quite elderly. It is a nice hobby to keep a man busy, he doesn't need scum doing this to him. This has been happening quite a lot recently in the UK, I read about it in Cage and Aviary Birds Newspaper a lot... Its stupid as the birds are not exactly worth a lot of money for reselling, it's not like they are a pair of macaws or something. But the birds would be of huge sentimental value to the man as he bred them himself.... Sick!
