Rochestown is fine but people talk about the traffic being bad there in the mornings. All depends on where you'll be working. Its quite close to Douglas where there's more action than Rochestown. Alot depends on where in Rochestown you are I suppose.

Reckon You'll be heading towards Douglas to socialise.

No the small shop has been closed for a few years now! Half built construction site now! Also quite a nice chinese called the Luyan above the briar rose. Tbh its a very nice place! Much better then a lot of places. Cinema in the centre of the village too, not sure if anyones mentioned it! Tbh i dont like it that much, if you have the choice go to mahon point for movies! Btw there are boardie nights in the city so if u want to meet up with some people check out sum stickys on cork city forum

I suppose it's worth pointing out that Kiltegan is closer to Douglas village than Rochestown, which is a good thing for conveniences in socialising, shopping, bus transport to town, etc.

The sign that says 'welcome to rochestown' is about half way through kiltegan so its really an inbetween place :-) i would go for beers cable but alas im only a little 'un still :-( but seems to be a gd few ppl from the area and you could probably rope in tirabaralla, commiebaz, vinta, mini, etc. from general thread :-P

Hey thanks for the great info. I think I have a car lined up. May stay the first few nights at the Rochestown Park Hotel...

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭magicianz

Ahh cool cool tis a nice hotel! Never stayed in a room but the staff in the bar/restaurant are generally nice :-) why are you staying there tho? Is it just while you get your stuff in? If you want to tell us that is :-)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 113 ✭✭Jhazon

I'll stay at the hotel until I can get into a more permanent place.

I'm living in Thornbury View at the moment. Nice, quiet estate.
Ten minutes max to get onto the link.
Not much to do to be honest. The Rochestown Inn is a short walk, Douglas is a bit of a trek.

You must be a gd bit away so cause it takes about 30 seconds to drive to the link from my area. Heard good things about thornbury myself! Sounds like my estate :-)

Well, that's at worst. It's just two minutes without traffic but the Rochestown road does get backed up as far as Coach Hill at times.

If you are over 20 it's fine. They only attack the young'uns... And it's the scum that come up from mahon that are usually responsible

Thornbury is a great place to live. Just wait till the summer, chilling outside the Rochestown Inn with good beers and good friends. Happy days like!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,015 ✭✭✭Ludo

I live in Thornbury View as well. But I leave just before 7 every morning so takes me about 2/3 mins to get to the South Ring :D

Can take a good but longer if you leave after 8 but having lived in Dublin for 12 years, comparing the traffic here to the Dublin traffic is just wrong. I laugh at people who give out about Cork traffic. It is getting worse obviously over time but still nothing like Dublin traffic. My commute to work has gone from 90 mins each way to 15 mins each way (maybe 25 mins on a really bad day if there is a crash or something).

Rochestown is the place to be. I dont understand the people talking about traffic, I see no problems with traffic on clarkes hill at 8.10am every morning. Theres a few nices pubs around. Mount oval bar is a great place for a match and the rochestown inn is great.

I would agree with the poster saying that you would be better cycling to work. It would be quicker, but a bummer when it rains. Any idea what general area you will be in?

  • Registered Users Posts: 296 ✭✭BeansMeansHynes

Yeah I second what DJ Hafez said about Ballinlough.

I live here and its full of little scumbags that hang around at the weekend and they certainly are not harmless. I have seen the damage they can do.

Oh god and the parking. I think that is just where I live tho. When these houses were being built I dont think it was taken into account that people might have more than more car. Trying to get parking outside my house is the bane of my life.

    ****parking rant over

no im not a child actually maybe some people here need to lighten up and take a joke. fair enough my comment wasnt helpful and i apologise i meant no offence. also i really hope your not trying to compare me to those little scumbags who hang around cork and if you are id love to hear what you spent your time doin during your teens?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭magicianz

Try a :-) if your joking cause we cant exactly read your body language. Since u asked, Im still in my teens and im not a delinquent vandal/alcoholic/drug addict. I help people pick up stuff they drop, hold doors open, polite to people and dont go out destroying other peoples property. And no im not a goodie two shoes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 443 ✭✭cork1

will do in future. and for the record im not a scumbag either. im 19. have never been involved with the gaurds, never vandalised, never drank underage, never robbed or hurt someone. and if i was to try and hang around and intimidate people like they do id end up in a field of cows or something. lol the joys of living in the country!

Technically that incident wasnt in rochestown so no worries bout it in our fair area *touches wood*

Glad to know we brightened your day :-P

Oh, aye that was in ballinlough. Though a car was burnt out across the road from my house a few months back. But don't let this scaremongering put you off OP, it's very rare an incident of that calibre would happen in my area of Rochestown. Nice place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,739 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

Jesus, there's a car burnt out in My general Area at least every 2 months. I am just talking about the side of mahon that is nearest Mahon Point too!!! From the Split Skehard Road makes over to Mahon Point.

And even then, 2 months would be a long time between it.

It used to be a once a week occurance when the Halting site was still there, but now that the Travellers have been given lovely big free and clear Houses, it's calmed down alot.

Jeez lads you are certainly scaring our Canadian friend! I am a good bit beyond 19 years old & I don't see half of the stuff going on that ye guys see!!

The move to Douglas/Rochestown to my mind is a good one, it is a well served area with all the amenities you will need. Good to hear you have a car, public transport here is not exactly joined up, more a load of routes that may or may not coincidently join up!

I almost bought a house in Thornbury, I liked to look of the place, but went further up Garryduff hill in the end. The area is a mass of houses really but the hills kind of disguise it.
Traffic is certainly not to Dublin levels, so don't be put off by those comments. If you are a 9am starter it will be at it's heaviest, seems like the majority still start at 9am still, to be more precise the school runs cause the most chaos. The traffic (or lack of it) between June-August is so much better with the schools off.
I notice that if I leave before 7.40am I can be in city centre & parked up by 8am. If I leave at 7.50am it will be 8.25am before I am parked up usually.
