Is it safe to freeze a cooked meal, say a stew, if the beef was previously frozen?
I checked Bord Bia website and I'm still not sure.

    Thanks

    Hi,

you cannot re-freeze a meal previuosly fronzen 'cause the meal develops some organisms which are not safe to be frozen again,
but you can keep it in the fredge for just a couple of days not more. :o

You defrosted frozen beef, cooked it, and now want to freeze the stew? Then it should be fine. Any bacteria that may have been present in the frozen beef should have been destroyed by thorough cooking. Once you cool down your cooked stew quickly, freeze it, and re-heat thoroughly when you want to have it next, it should be fine.

So the beef was frozen, then defrosted, then cooked into the stew? It depends how you defrosted the beef really. If you defrosted it overnight in the fridge, it should be okay to refreeze. This website might help: http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/food-safety-topics/foodborne-illnesses/freezing-thawing/fact-sheet-frozen-foods4_6.htm#P114_10912.

As always, please don't take any advice given to you on this forum as fact. Check an official food safety website, such as the one linked above.

That is a myth. The real reason not to refreeze thawed meat is that it changes the texture and hence the taste, if frozen and defrosted properly it can be done many times with no harmful effect. The exploding liquid cells change the texture, fruit goes mushy. Some items are quick frozen to stop this effect.

Manufacturers will warn not to refreeze stuff because they want it to taste its best. If you destroyed the texture you might think the company had poor products.

You can freeze and thaw and refreeze raw or cooked meat no problem if done properly.

+1 on all of the above.

If meat has been frozen when raw, it is definitely ok to freeze it again when it's cooked.
