External Hard Drive Power Problem

    Hi All,
Last week the hard drive on my mac failed. Have managed to replace the hard drive and reinstall the software, and managed to salvage most of the important information that hadn't been backed up.

So tonight, I decided to plug in my external hard drive where I had most of my original data but it's not working. Here's what happened.

Plugged it in, light (which normally goes green), flashed red and switched off.
After several attempts, no joy at getting any power to it, so took it apart, removed the hard drive and put it into another external hard drive casing that I had - same problem, no power.

However, when I remove one of the connecting cables from the casing to the actual hard drive (don't know the technical name of the cable - the one with the yellow, red and black wires), then the power comes on fine. As soon as I plug that in, power knocks off.

Can anyone help me fix this problem? I've already had several heart attacks in the last week when the mac died. Can't believe that I might be about to lose my backed up data as well!
