Best Premier League striker/forward?

Judging players on their record while at a PL club only, so that includes games in European competition plus internationals if applicable.

edit - for clarity, please consider players records while they were playing PL football. That may include domestic and continental cups plus internationals, but time spent outside England, in lower divisions, or in the old 1st Division should not count.

I can think of many candidates:

    Shearer
    Van Nistelrooy
    Owen
    Fowlers
    Henry
    Bergkamp
    Cole
    Ferdinand
    Torres
    Zola
    Drogba
    Cantona
    Hasselbaink
    Yorke
    Anelka
    Sheringham
    Rooney
    Ian Wright
    Le Tiss
    Di Canio

    Any more?

He's not up there with them but Kevin Davies has got to be one of the hardest working strikers in his PL career.

    Le Tissier was good.

How's about this for an idea?

I pick 16 forwards (with your help) that fit the bill, and we have a series of polls to get the opinion of the forum.

Do it like a knockout tournament, one player vs one player, withthe winner advancing to the next round. We'd have:

    Last 16
    Last 8
    Semi Final
    Final

If there were enough volunteers, I could do a draw to assign a poster to each player and you could argue the case for him?

I was just about to ask what the object of this was. Is it simply compiling a list of good strikers or are we looking to achieve who is best type thing.

The problem here is fans of particular teams bias and recent year blinkers. If its premiership history then surely there can be no-one other than Alan Shearer and how come Mark Hughes isn't on the list?

It's not scientific, it's just a bit of fun. I'll encourage people to vote without their red/green/blue/white/black&white/can't be arsed typing any other colours tinted glasses on, but there's only so much I can do.

I left Hughes off by accident, but I don't think he'd make the top 16 based on his PL record. Do you?

This way could lead to a very unfair/unbalanced winner. How will the draw be decided ? Open draw?
    For example
Shearer was drawed/put up against Henry in round 1.we would lose 1 striker which could/should be top 5ish if not better finishing in 8th to 16th spot, or two weaker players drawed against each other and one going through which (both cases) would be wrong .If you know what i mean ?

How about a round of votes
Round 1 list of 16 all voters(posters) have three votes, Top 10 go through
Round 2 list of 10 all voters have three votes Top 5 go through
Round 3 list of 5 all voters have three votes top 2 go through
    FINAL STRAIGHT VOTE OFF

Extra votes for posters in early rounds will help balance any tinted glasses

thinking about it ..Maybe this could be alot/too much work ...maybe

Do what my own forum does. Four 4-way matches with the top two qualifying for the quarters. Then two 4-way matches with the top two qualifying for the semis. Then 1st vs 2nd and 2nd vs 1st in the semis, with the two winners in the final.

The problem with Rockmans procedure is it can be clear very early on whose going to win, making the rest of the tourney a bit boring. Say Henry is 10-15 votes clear on top in round 1. If that happens you may as well call off the competition.

With the way I have above, it's simple, easy to use, exciting and fair.

I definitely wouldn't have a straight 1v1 knockout either too.

Actually, Heskey should be there. He's a member of the '100 Club' afterall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

    Cole
    Shearer
    Sheringham
    Bergkamp
    Henry
    Wright
    Di Canio
    Le Tissier
    Ferdinand
    Anelka
    Fowler
    Owen
    Hasselbank
    Zola
    Van Nist

cant think of a 16th that really deserves to be there. Maybe Keane or Heskey

So Heskey and his 100-odd goals are not worthy of a place but Wayne Rooney is?

Strikers to have scored 100 goals or more in the premiership:

    Alan Shearer 260
    Andrew Cole 187
    Thierry Henry 174
    Robbie Fowler 161
    Les Ferdinand 150
    Teddy Sheringham 147
    Michael Owen 139
    Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink 128
    Dwight Yorke 123
    Ian Wright 113
    Dion Dublin 111
    Robbie Keane 105
    Matt Le Tissier 101
    Emile Heskey 100

The likes of Torres, Rooney et al aren't in the conversation for me at this stage of their careers.

    Drogba and Torres.

personally, I think Drogba is one of the best forwards I have seen live. His strength, movement and touch are all perfect imho.

Cantona is the most over-rated player ever.

Drogba & Torres haven't don enough for me tbh to merit a place in this list.

(it hurt to say that about the boy but its true)

Heskey has scored 102 league goals in 13 seasons, if you play long enough you'll score enough goals IMO, but that's a poor rate of goalscoring. His overall record is about 1 in every 4 while playing PL football. His international record is 6 in 52 appearances, only 2 of which were in competitive games.

I think he's an effective player, but I'd have Cantona, Keane, Phillips at least ahead of him. Fcuk it, he only played a season and a half but I'd have Klinsmann in as well.

You might lose 5-4. But you would think you'd always score.

No but Heskey didn't make the OP, despite hitting over 100 goals so does that not mean that he isn't deemed good enough?

The original left out quite a few names mate, including Rooney ;)

If I'm honest, and I'm judging both players on what I've seen them do during their time playing while at a PL club, I'd say Rooney is a much better player than Heskey. I'm sure when Rooney has completed his 13th PL season he'll have a much better goal tally than Heskey for a start.

Possibly so, but we all know that if this was just a debate about goals it'd be pretty straight forward.

Heskey brings so much more to the team than goals, hence his consistent inclusion at international level under various managers.

I'd have him in there above Di Canio at least.

    Duncan Ferguson (when not injured)

An in-form Dunc was unplayable and unstoppable.

Ian Rush played in the premier league so is eligable.

    469 games, 229 goals.

He has to be in it.
