I recently applied for a ICE Visa from Permanent TSB i have been with the bank Since i was a Kid and applied for a Credit Card as i need it for Work and buying various things Online.

They Refused me and said i had to be Earning over €30K a year does this seem excessive i mean my friends still in College who earn maybe €100 a week have them no problem its really fustrating been refused i would like to keep with TSB as i have various accounts with them and it is easy to transfer funds between accoutns online.

Any ideas on what i should do Complain to bank Manager?

    Thanks.

That does seem a bit strict alright especially after having an account with them for so long.
You could try another bank or maybe order an ICB report to see there is another reason why they wont issue you one.

    ICB

I think it's refreshing to see banks doing their job for once.

By not giving there Customers access to there Services? Its not the actually Credit that i need its the Function of Buying items and Booking things etc Online Laser card is very Limited.

And as for 3V Cards there is a Limit on how much you can buy Also the Halifax Visa Debit card charge you for use outside Ireland.

I know we are in a Credit Crunch but come on i have no outstanding Loans and have always paid them off Early.

They should offer you a service.

    e.g. a secured card.

But I'm glad to see there starting to put some restrictions on credit

we have the highest credit card debt in Europe.

    something had to give.

I'm pretty sure the ICE card used to have a minimum income requirement (hence it getting a lower rate as it was seen as a lower risk to lend those those with that income).

Perhaps you don't meet the criteria for the ICE visa, but might for the standard ptsb Visa card.
Also the Halifax Visa Debit card charge you for use outside Ireland.

    I think it's only non-Euro transactions.

Credit card providers also build in commission on foreign currency transactions, so it's not always as simple as the credit card price being the same when converted from sterling/dollars etc.

Are you adamant about staying with TSB?

I was a student with very limited income when AIB gave me a card for the same reasons you want it - booking or buying online. 3V cards are almost useless imho. Granted, that was almost 3 years ago, but there must be someone who'll give you a card.

I was going travelling in Nov '07 for a year (so pre recession/banks falling over), went into TSB to extend & load my card as it expiring during the year and while I was in there they asked me if I wanted to 'upgrade' to ICE, I said grand, no questions asked.

I was only just out of college the previous May, skint like any other student, had saved the price of the flight during the intervening 6 months and had taken out a loan of 5k to keep me going during the travels til I got to Aus. The bank knew all this.

Crazy of the bank looking back, worked out fine for me though :)

They gave me a visa this time last year. I'm a student and have a part time job, but said there was enough money going into my account for it. They wouldn't give me a laser card though unless I changed my account from a student one to a normal one.

Can you please be polite in your posting? The OP wasn't asking for a critique of the banking system, but instead asking for advice on his personal situation.

he asked should he complain to the bank

I was pointing out the bank are doing their job so no need

    I don't see the issue.

I recently tried to apply for a credit card with NIB only to be told that they are not accepting applications from people without existing current accounts with them due to the current economic conditions

I initially applied for a Visa ICE card when it first came out. My application was denied as my salary wasn't high enough but a short while later, they lower the minimum salary and they accepted my application. I don't think I even had to reapply.

Banks have to tighten up their lending criteria due to the high amount of accounts in arrears. People who earn more are obviously less risky for small unsecured debt and they really don't need more defaulters. This (>30k) is a ptsb wide policy now so complaining to managers etc will get you nowhere. Sorry!

OP - Get a copy of your credit history, it could be that there has been some identity fraud, or just a simple mistake from a lender, that is causing your application to be refused.

They refused him because he was earning less than 30k, as stated in OP. All applicants now have to earn over 30k to be considered. V simple. Credit is harder to get in a downturn.
