I would prefer if the frame was a manky lidl colour with lidl logos. Nobody would nick it then!

Note, no one here has said that the bike is awful, just saying that at that price, the chance is the quality isn't going to be high on the frame.

That's it in a nutshell. Noone has ridden or even seen this bike in real life. I couldn't find any reviews on line for stratos frames, so maybe its worth the punt and maybe its not. For 900 euros noone is gonna say yes definitely go an buy it.

People have been on boards spins with all sorts of abilites and all prices of bikes and noone has been snobbish about it.

    Hello,
I'm new on here, this is my 1st post.
I stumbled upon this board whilst searching for info and opinion on Lidl's “Stratos” bike. I recently bought a second hand Mountain Bike, GT 2008 Outpost Disc, the best bike I've ever had (comparing it to £50 stuff from Makro), for fun/fitness, having stopped smoking, at the age of 42!
I'm not trying to set the world alight, I do at most 40 tarmac miles per week in 10-15 mile chunks. Tarmac because I cycle with my GF, who has a road bike (Giant OCR4).
So, I would like a Road bike, when I seen Lidl had a Road bike coming up on their special offer sheet, I thought great but I was expecting something around £150-250. I'm in Northern Ireland where this bike will be 799 sterling, probably slightly cheaper than 899 yoyos.
I don't want to get too carried away, spending what I would consider a fortune on a bicycle but I do appreciate that really cheap bikes are a waste of money. I also appreciate it is difficult/impossible to judge it properly without actually getting your hands on one. Looking on eBay you could strip it and sell the bits separately at a profit.

    Very good, I'd imagine.

    So you haven't ridden it?

Last weekend I tested a mate of mine. He was going on about how he went to a wine tasting course. I bet him a tenner that in a blindfold test he could not tell the difference between red and white wine.

    He could'nt.

No, sure the bike is not on sale until the 9th of April.

So you can "guarantee the quality" of a bike you haven't even ridden is "vastly superior" to people's ability to ride it? And you call everyone else arrogant?

    Nice.

Do you have to get wet before you will beileve it's raining?

Same principle here. I looked at the bike, looked at the spec, and I then I made a decision on the quality.

Oh he is quite the arrogant idiot when it comes to lifestyle issues. He could go into the local deli and ask for things I have never even heard of.

And so have we, yet you seem to disagree intently with some of our conclusions and label us as snobs... we're simply extrapolating different conclusions from the same data .

His lack of wine related tastebuds aside, you call him an idiot because he orders things in a deli you've not heard of? Man, I bet you're a great friend...

Good point - I don't see any mudguard eyelets on the frame or fork.

There's no indication of the "quality" of the frame. It's a complete unknown.

Oh those poncy foreign foods. Pizza, Spaghetti, Curry, Rice. Meat and 2 veg man yourself then I take it?
Pardon him for trying to broaden his mind.
p.s. you can get some of those things you've never heard of in Lidl too. Salami. Olives. Parma ham. Tuna. the list is endless.

I'm sure the only reason this bike exists is because Shimano needs to dump all the old Ultegra groupsets.

What in the name of all that is holy are you raving on about.
Your friend, deli's, wine. What has that got to do with the bike.
So what if your friend asks for things that you have not heard of, thats life part of lifes ricj tapestry - finding new stuff.
Be honest, you have no friend, there is no wine or deli's and you dont have a madone.
Now, just in case you accuse me of arrogance, dont bother, I am arrogant. I know it, my friends now and my family know it.
Sorry, but I dont know why, but your last couple of posts have really annoyed me. I apologise, but for some inexplicable reason I am furious.

300 quid from ebay, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Mirage frame with a few Trek stickers on it :D

If I wanted to spend 900 euro on a bike ... why would I spend it on something I don't know ... which has no online reviews and which I won't even be allowed to test ride.

People on this forum love value for money ... even though they spend truck loads of money. Planet X and Focus did not just happen overnight ... bike magazines reviewed it ... websites were searched .. a few people bought it .. others tested it and then they were declared good enough to join Boards bang for the buck list.

Regardless of what bike I buy, upgraditis will set in sooner rather than later .. in which case I would rather have a frame I know is good rather than something I have no clue about.

This has got nothing to do with my bike riding ability what so ever. I have the money .. I shall buy the best I can .. and I don't think the Lidl bike offers what most people who are into cycling want.

And the very fact that you bought a Trek Madone for 300 quid .. makes this look a not so good bargain ... after all its 600 more.

Would you put 900 euro on something with a guaranteed 5% return or would you rather spend it on the blackjack table .... your choice ..

Lidl seems to have gone for a market which doesn't exist. People who buy standard Halfords bike will not go for this as its too expensive .. and people in the know would not spend 900 euro on a frame which they know nothing about.

Given that Ultegra is more than most people need, and an aluminium frame is less than most people want, it's hard to understand why they didn't spec 105 or Tiagra and bring the price down to €650-€800, or at least have two versions.

As for it being new/unknown, every brand has to start somewhere.

This sums it up for me.

I'm not srpinging the guts of a grand for a bike from Lidl - not for reasons of snobbery but because I'd like there to be some history. I'd also like to be able to bring it back for adjustments etc and see and talk to the guy who is building it.

I'm sure if someone buys one these bikes and posts a decent and detailed review they'll sell more next time around - in this situation given the money involved and the potential for serious injury if some spotty oik in the warehouse doesn't put it together properly, I'll hang on to my cash - at least until next time.

Of course after the budget tomorrow, we may all be riding Lidl bikes!!!

Same principle here. I looked at the bike, looked at the spec, and I then I made a decision on the quality.

So you can tell its a good frame just by looking at a picture of it? I´m deeply impressed. I hope you only use your superpowers for good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 573 ✭✭✭dave.obrien

i'd like this bike, but i already spent all my money on a cheaper trek bike. i think this bike will be very good, especially for under a grand. i'm sure the frame would not be as good as frames that you would normally get with an ultegra groupset, but so what? it will probably be good enough to get me from my house to meet up with a group of people and put myself through some sort of punishment involving struggling up the side of a mountain for forty minutes in the granny gear just so i can fly down the other side in about a tenth of that time.

i think sales will be slow though. people willing to spend that much an a bike will proabably go to chainreactioncycles or wiggle, or even take the hit on an lbs (though after recent reviews, avoid the quays...). people willing to buy a bike in lidl won't understand the price mark. the thing i can't imagine is the market for this bike. although having said that there do seem to be an awful lot of people getting into cycling/triathlon's and i think this bike would be great for them. if you're one of those people reading this wondering what to do about the lidl bike, i'd say it's probably good value, and if you do get it, just bring it to an lbs to get it set up for you.

i'd also like to say that i think paul hardwick has done a wondeful job of entertaining/infuriating some of the others on this board by being exactly what he claims they are: somebody who is a position to tell people about something they know nothing about. what's hilarious about the whole thing is we know you know nothing about it, the bike, as you said, isn't on sale yet. i know there were others saying the bike was rubbish before they had seen it, but you've definitely made a martyr out of yourself.

all in all, if anyone want to get me this bike, or buy my trek 1200 with a tiagra groupset, spd pedals and a LIDL computer off me for €899, i'd be happy to let some of you test ride my lidl bike at some stage.

2kg of potatoes, 4 apples and 6 canned sausages (german ofc).

Was able to find this ... about the frame and fork:

Frame / Fork: Race-Alu-Frame 7005 / Carbon fork ITM Visia

    - 7000-series aluminum is alloyed primarily with zinc. It tends to be harder and stronger but perhaps more brittle.

The ITM Visia fork ... I think they're about 60quid on wiggle

That's the same fork as I have on my Kinesis.

It did an excellent job of keeping the head tube off the ground and also looks quite pretty.

It does look like an ITM Visia but with Visia replaced with "Stratos" (fork manufacturers do this a fair amount, matching to a frame.) Where did you find confirmation? 7005 aluminium is a very common alloy for bikes.

I have an ITM Visia cross fork on my tourer, there is also a road version without the canti mounts which Lumen has. ITM are a perfectly reputable bike company and the fork is fine, as Lumen says it indeed keeps the head tube off the ground and I would add, being carbon, it is laterally stiff but vertically compliant :)
