Could I suggest that usernames longer than X which cause the username to poke into the post contents area be displayed in a smaller font so this doesn't happen because it screws up the aesthetics

check out any of minesajackdaniels posts.

if you use a smaller keyboard it might make a difference :/
    or maybe not.

It hardly makes a huge difference. Its not like MAJD's name is really that long is it?

Can the registration not be changed so that names can be a maximum of X characters/spaces?

It is. My name is at the maximum and it still pushes it out a little.

    Just truncate long names automatically?
I'm on 1440 x 900 and MAJD and AC is still poking into the post. Same for boneyarsebogman

    Resolution doesn't make a difference. I'm on 1920x1200 and it's the same.

Yup. 4 of them. That's probably why.

Maybe those rules were not always in place though as minesajackdaniels is 2 characters longer than yours and was probably not subject to such restrictions at the time.

I agree with the OP though.

It's not the size of your user name that matters, but what you do with it.
