Cat eating coal

Can anyone tell me why my cat is eating coal? Today I found him arse up in the coal bucket about 4 times. A few days ago he was on top of a full bucket of coal licking it. I am puzzled. I wonder is he lacking some minerals or something. Any clues out there?
