Over in bargain alerts there's a discussion about the Tesco meal for two for €11.50 - it's a main course, side of veg, dessert and a bottle of wine for that price. Someone said it wasn't great value, and you'd be better off buying fresh meat, fruit and veg and cooking your own for that money.

The best I could come up with was chicken breasts with white sauce, carrots, followed by an apple tart made with a single apple! (Assuming a bottle of wine for €5.50).

So, main course, veg and dessert for €6 for two people - what would you make? Assume you already have salt, pepper, butter and unlimited water to start with, and you can use the wine in your cooking if you want.

On bargain alerts they also have a post that says you can feed 4 people for a tenner. One large chicken for €4.99 (€2 off), Mange tout, or broccoli and potatoes at 69c each per bag. For desert, fresh pineapple for 69c and icecream (I can't remember how much, maybe €1.99). With the icecream, that comes to just over €9. You could buy a drinkable bottle of wine for €6.99. That comes to around €16. Not bad for dinner for 4 using fresh ingredients and including a bottle of wine.

All ingredients are on special offer from Aldi. And the chicken is Irish.
