Cycling on the roads these days is a death wish (even the old country roads are speedways now).

Are there any good cycle trails around that are safe, quiet, no traffic etc?

Portumna forest park say that their Rimaher and Bonaveen trails are open to Walkers and cycleists, there is also a challenging cycle trail a few miles west of Oughterard called Derroura, more details at

That would be Derraoura which I mentioned already above.

They above suggestions are fine but for a good long cycle, the options are very limited apart from tthe hard shoulder of the N17 or N18. Agree that the county roads are lethal. If you don't get run down, you get savaged by an uncontrolled dog.

    Hi,
If you're not looking for exclusively off road cycles then you have a lot more options (still without risk of getting ploughed over).
    Here's a few-
If you don't live nearby you can put the bike in the boot and park nearby.
    1. Head out Bishop O Donnel Road (out of town direction), turn right onto Rahoon Road going up the hill. Keep going straight (after the top of the hill you're in REAL countryside with few cars. After a few miles you'll come to a V in the road, if you head left it'll bring you past a golf course, turn left again (down big hill) and you'll come out in Spidal- cycle back is on the main road though.

Alternativley you can go straight on instead of left down to Spidal or take the right at the V and you can go on for ages....

    2. At the Kirwan roundabout (by Dunnes) take the turn going up the small hill/Castlelawn Heights. At the T junction at the top of the hill turn right and there's quiet roads there.....

    3. outside Galway- when you reach Clarinbridge turn right and there's some nice quiet country roads there....

    4. Lady Gregory Park in Gort.

Let me know if you find any other- I'm living out just past Claregalway so would like to find some on this side of town.
