    That was a hair stander!

Besides that, how will Dewey keep his job?

I shouldn't have watched that right before bed, the ending was pretty disturbing. Both because of what happened and that the cameraman did nothing to help except zoom in a bit. *shudder*

Oh, Dewey. He was on form last night. "Look at her there, bleeding like a stuck pig!"

    What. A. Show!

    What an ending
And the cameraman just standing there doing nothing

Dewey being Dewey, if he doesn't get sacked over that he'll never get sacked

I wish they'd show more of the captain.
Odd fellow, part weird but part superb at his job. He's missed

In its fourth season, TNT's acclaimed cop drama Southland continues to grow compared to season three. Last week, the series drew 2.6 million viewers in Live + 3 (1.9 million Live + Same Day), along with 1.1 million adults 18-49 and 1.3 million adults 25-54 in Live + 3. For the season, Southland is up 5% among adults 18-49 and 3% among adults 25-54 compared to last year.

Well that was a disturbing ending.

I thought I had missed something and was watching The Walking Dead for a second.

The same sort of shock factor as Nate's death last season. Southland certainly know how to do good compelling TV.

They're very good at going from light to extremely dark in a matter of seconds. Nate's death was one of the most harrowing things I've ever seen on tv and it came out of nowhere. Like what happened with Cooper, there's no build-up and it's a huge shock to the system. You don't have time to process what's happening. Much like actually being a cop, I suppose. That's why I love this show, even if occasionally it is quite disturbing.

I'm not a fan of the preview of next week at the end. That was another brilliant final scene but all the suspense was taken away directly after.

Yeh it's really annoying when they preview the next episode as soon as the credits roll and completely undercut any dramatic tension from the ending , same deal with southlands completely unnecessary(IMO) out of continuity spoiler scenes (with accompanying pointless narration) that open every ep . A prime example of this saw last episodes suicide attempt robbed of any tension as we already knew from the opening spoiler scene that Cooper catches him.

and don't get me started on the how trite and obvious most of the narrations are.

Wow, shocking ending! Think they really capture what it might be like to be a street cop, one minute you're laughing and joking and attending ridiculous shouts, the next you're fighting for your life.
Agree though about the preview of next week's episode, really spoils the dramatic tension.

I just wanted to hug Cooper at the end of that episode. The poignancy of that last scene was slightly diluted by me yelling "The Wire! McNuggets! The Wire!" repeatedly, though.

Such a disappointing turn of events in Tang and Cooper's partnership.

Lydia is worrying me as well. I'm assuming she's waiting until a "safe" amount of time has passed (maybe 4 months) to start telling people/her superiors but it's making me nervous.

Glad that Ben stood up to Sammy over his passive aggressive bull****. He needs to move on from the pipe thing. Did Tang remove some plastic thing from the gun, to make it look less like a toy? That's not going to end well, once the kid comes to and says he didn't remove it, and Coop suspects something. Why the hell doesn't Lydia just say she's preggers? That storyline is beginning to drag, now.

Agreed about Ben and Sammy. I'm not sure how Sammy took the Nate comment, though.

Yup, Tang removed it when Cooper came through the gate. He knows she did but didn't say anything in his interview with internal investigations. That's why airsoft guns and toy guns have neon orange tops on them, so people won't confuse them with real guns.

I'm guessing there's two reasons for Lydia not telling anyone yet: a) she knows that having this baby will most likely end/really curtail her career and her career means everything to her so she wants to put that off for as long as possible and b) she previously had a miscarriage, she's probably terrified it will happen again and wants to wait until it's "safe" to tell everyone.

Yeah she took the orange top off it, to make her shooting the kid look more plausible. You saw her throwing it in the bowl in her hallway along with her keys when she got home at the end.

Not really, just passing his 'only God can judge me' mantra onto Tang. Everyone seems to be on a slippery slope or just about there.

Every case she's had this season has involved a pregnant mother or someone having trouble looking after the kids. Feel like we're being hit over the head with it at this stage.

This season, though very good, has not been up to the usual standards.

I like the whole 'Police in the media' theme with ben hitting the girl on camera, Liu getting bate and everyone watching on youtube and Coop nearly dying while a camera man watched but the Homicide cases have been very weak. New guy can be annoying and preachy. Miss the gang detective team of sammy and nate, some great stories in that.

I liked the joke about the scout leader and this means you are a burnt out cop :D

Thought the episode was starting strong and going to head down some interesting route.

Not realy, that was a fairly weak episode

And they need to give the captain a bigger role

    Christ.

When Southland turns up the heat, it comes out of nowhere! What an ending.

I've not commented on Southland in detail as i had 7 episodes to catchup on, over the last few days i watched episode 2-8, and have epiosde 9 ready for tonights viewing. Overall the season has been solid, i can't say too much else but i don't see any decrease in quality or storylines, the show always delivers.

Season 4 finale next week...and it's got more shockers ahead.

Cooper and the 'role reversal' made me LOL, "nice house".

The garden shed scene with Lydia was

I agree. But why would they let a pregnant cop be first in the door. Surely her partner should have been the first one in? Then 2 uniformed cops and Lydia's partner(forget his name) run after the lad and leave her on her own! Crazy! The ending was really good, can't wait too see next weeks. Hope Sammy makes it!

She only told Robinson, thats her partner, after the incident. She has told nobody from work because she doesnt want to be put on desk duty. I thought she would have slaughtered her rookie partner for not staying with her.

Excellent ending - even better that it wasn't out of nowhere but the consequence of Ben's actions over the season.

Lydia's attack also had me holding my breath. It seems she's finally stopped being an idiot about her pregnancy and telling people because she's endangered herself and her child.

As for Cooper - wonder if he'll get any closure with Tang? He clearly has little respect for her now but maybe also for a department that has people like her in power. Could make him turn back to the meds.

Lydia and her partner: Did he assume she was behind them also chasing the runner? Did she go into the house assuming he was still behind her or go in knowing she was alone?
Scene was a little confusing and pretty disturbing. The creepiest thing is that the guy never said anything or even yelled, he was just quietly stabbing her.

I'm taking the breakdown in Tang and Cooper's partnership pretty hard, they were a great team.

The ending: yikes. I purposely stopped watching before the previews of next week's show so I don't know what Sammy's condition is. Damn Ben and his Knight in Shining Armour complex.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,438 ✭✭✭TwoShedsJackson

A good episode but there was zero reason for Lydia's partner to start going after the guy who ran from the house (as uniformed cops were chasing him) apart from leaving Lydia alone to get in trouble. Surprising for Southland.

And again with the 'Lydia meets pregnant women/mothers who will now have to raise their kids alone' stuff - really, we get it already. At this stage I'm hoping she has an abortion just so they can stop hitting us over the head with this every week.

    The ending

He's a rookie detective though, still thinking in many ways like a uniformed cop.

any chance you could spoiler tag any mention of future shows

Big finale next week, i suspect Tang gets killed....since lucy liu has a new pilot on the go, so she either leaves or gets killed off...i suspect the latter as Southland thrives on shockers.

That scene with Lydia reminded me alot of the stabbing scene in Saving Private Ryan....scary stuff!

I hope there is some kind of chatter between Coop and Sherman, weird they barely taked to each other only once all season. Even if their paths crossed chasing the same guy.

Sherman turning into a crooked cop, I'd a good feeling that it would happen but I didnt think it would happen so quickly and easily.

Alright Episode, good to see Danny back, heard the joke he told before but the way he said it still made me laugh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

Good episode and very nicely wrapped up in the end as they swop around the different characters

Ben has changed, gone to the dark side

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,010 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Quality finale. The character arcs finished up very well. Biggest turn around of course is Sherman but nothing about it was out of the blue as we saw him lose the run of himself throughout the episodes. He really needed a stronger guiding hand like Cooper.

Sammy - I liked his motivation for helping out Sherman and how he tried to guide him. How he's going to take what he sees as failure next season will be interesting. He didn't look very happy in the closing shot.

Cooper vs Tang: Good way to finish it off, with them both venting. Hard to like Tang after she shot the kid but, this being a show like "Southland", she got away with it. I reckon from the ending though that Cooper is able to move past it. If there's a fifth season, will he be riding with this rookie?

Lydia's arc was quietest here (and where was her partner?) but finally she accepted that she's pregnant. About time.

Oh and really enjoyed Ferguson this episode. I wonder if he'll partner up now with Sherman? Sam may not be able to work with him in the same way (or could be restricted to desk duty for a bit). Ferguson's un-PC nature got a few laughs from me.

It seems like this season was to show how being on the streets as a cop can affect someone -

we have Ben turning from Goodie-goodie cop to being a dirty one; shooting someone and then planting the gun.

Lydia becoming slowly losing it, through seeing how life as a mother can go from worse to worse (I found the scene with the child in bandages particularly bad), before finally admitting she was pregnant as things got too much

John and Tang's head-to-head, with him now questioning his being a cop.

It's lining up to be an interesting next season. Southland is up there with the best TV shows being shown right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

I felt a little let down by the finale. I think the show has lost something this season but I'm not sure what. I'll still be waiting for next season.

Not a great finale at all. It wrapped things up but I think those things just weren't really interesting anyway (besides cooper vs wu-tang). I liked the ending for Coop breaking in a new recruit and keeping the orange tip on his key chain. Sammy was kind of wasted this season, just always seemed to be yearning for Ben's stories, definitely a shadow of his former self when he was a detective with Nate (were they gang squad?)

And whats the deal with Sammy's homelife. Did he have a kid with Nate's wife and no longer seeing her?

The best cop show on telly internet but hope they have a stronger backstory next season.

Weird that Lydias partner and Dewey both were missing from that episode.
