Take a peek at the relevant forum on www.thestudentroom.co.uk

It's maintained by students (they have their own wiki aswell that might have the info you need). All very friendly - and they love questions!

    Hi mirsiam,

I went to MMU was based in the John Dalton Building (next to All-saints). First year, I'd recommend you go into halls of residence. Loxford Towers is the best in my opinion (steer well clear of Montgomery Halls - right in the middle of moss side!!). Loxford is a stones throw away from All-saints and the student union and a 10 min walk to Aytoun. There are a couple of cinemas up the road (Odean and Cornerhouse). Can't say enough about it's location: The curry mile is a 10 minute bus journey away, the academy at MU is a great little venue which is about 5 minutes down the road, the BBC is across the road, there are bars, theatres and cinemas walking distance. It's worth going over for the weekend, especially during term time, to get an idea of the place. Great town, you'll love it.

I'm just going to be starting my final year at MMU.

Good university, and a great city.

I highly highly recommend the Halls of residence. I had a brilliant experience with mine; Wilmslow Park. I couldn't recommend the place highly enough.

It's a big development, above all the shops / restaurants / bars / necessities you could think of. There's a great social mix there... it even has a swimming pool and gym for a little extra /mth

Security wise, the halls are generally all very good... but again, I couldn't recommend Wilmslow highly enough in this area. 24 / hr security etc.

Can I ask, what are you going to be studying?

First of all, what's wrong with moss side? Are you still living in the 90s, or maybe reading the Daily Mail too much? It's fine these days, I lived there and encountered no problems, if you dabble with heavy amounts of drugs and put yourself about you'll get a seeing to but otherwise it's fine. I always find it ironic that out of town students rave about Fallowfield for having this, that and the other when it's practically in Moss side and yet Moss side is a no-go area.

Secondly, the curry mile has deteriorated worse than the global economy in recent years! Every week restaurants are being shut down after reports of severe food poisoning- my ex ended up contracting it twice in two visits to the curry mile. Back in the day it was a vibrant spot, had loads of quality restaurants and a top atmosphere but those days have gone. Avoid it like the plague.

Otherwise, fair analysis- Manchester's a great city. I'd like to think we welcome the students very well around here.

To the OP, if you want a lowdown of some of the best clubs in town let me know. Often the studenty places pale in comparison to lesser known spots.

Hey, I'm planning on going to MMU in September. I'll be in All Saints campus aswell. I've applied for Oxford court but if I dont get that then i'll go for private student accomodation.
