Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Analysis time.

Eamo: "Zonal marking is balls Bill!"

John: "I agree with Eamon there Bill."

    Nerve shredding stuff!

Chelseas use of diagonals and balls in the channels is very effective.

trying to watch this at work (tut tut). poxy link keeps re-loading. missed both goals but from what i've seen chelsea are by far the better side. drogba should have 2 at least, if not 3

Pfft, I see both teams getting 6 more.

Cracking first half though, Chelsea reacted very well to the early goal.

Hang on, wasn't this meant to be a bore draw?

    I want my money back.

Great game, we seem a bit sloppy at the back imo and we gotta tighten it up if we're going to have a chance at Stamford bridge. Going there with 2 away goals could be too much for us.

Liverpool 2-1 with Lucas last minute goal!! C'mon!!:D

eZe, Liverpool came out of the traps well, and some excellent play from Kuyt created the chance for Torres which he put away [Kuyt backheeled into Arbeloas run on the right corner, and he squared it to the penalty spot to be put away].

Since then, Liverpool have continued to harass up front, but haven't created a huge amount. Torres was almost in due to a Lampard mistake and Kuyt had a pretty good chance due to some shocking defending by Terry.

Chelsea on the other hand have had a lot of joy down the middle, right in the gap where Mascherano would normally be. Drogba got a great one on one due to Malouda nicking the ball off a Liverpool defending and another one due to a great through pass.

They have a massive dominance in the air, and it showed for Ivanovic's goal. It wasn't the fault of Zonal marking, it was just bad defending, no matter what system you are using.

Chelsea look the dominant team imo, but Torres and Gerrard still look very dangerous.
If play had continued I'd have been shocked if there wasn't another goal in it, but at half time, one of the teams might close up shop.

Without a doubt the most open Chelsea Liverpool game i've ever seen.

Great stuff from Chelsea, just step it up one more gear and we can come away winners.

Fantastic game thats been played at a really high tempo. Liverpool were the better side early on and Torres scored a lovely half volley after great work from Kuyt on the right. Chelsea reacted really professionally and came into the game, creating a number of chances which they failed to score from. However, they nicked a goal from a corner towards the end, and probably finished off the stronger team. Aurelio & Drogba stand out as having bad games, while Torres, Arbeloa and Chelsea's midfield in general, are playing really well.

Both teams playing well, and theres been plenty of chances. Chelsea have been the better team, slightly.

GREAT technique by Torres for that goal, but WTF were chelsea doing not having ANYONE even moderately close to him. Yet, RTE aren't complaining about that at all... It's only about Liverpool and zonal marking now though... :pac:

    Zonal marking is bad, mmkay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Am I alone in thinking the problem there wasn't zonal marking? The player in front of the ball should have made the header, and Sretle really should have been attacking that ball. Beyond that, Alonso wasn't doing anything at all.

It wasn't the system, it was the players.

Some times it is the system (Arsenal do very well in making the system kinda dodgy with the quick 1 yard switch), but that was just poor execution of the system, rather than the system being beaten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,067 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

When a team using man marking concedes a goal, its always the players fault and never the systems.

When a team using zonal marking concedes a goal, its always the fault of the system.

...that is, if you believe the pundits on tv. Retarded.

zonal marking is never the cause, it's always poor implementation of the system. Just like with man marking

Neither do I, I just posted that in anticipation of the RTE guys going on about it.

    Indeed, I was proved correct.

Hell of a game so far, great start for Torres and great response by Chelsea....unusually open game for these two, could end up 3-3!

The pace can't be maintained so the nature of the subs could be important.
