I just looked at this here http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/technology/article6050063.ece

Australia is planning to roll out 100Mbps broadband to 90% of its houses etc through fibre, and cover the remaining 10% with wireless.

And what do we have in response? We have 3 Mobile providing 1.3Mbps of 3G Wireless to the countryside.. oh joy. Our incompetant minister forked over €250 Million of our hard earned cash to a crowed of Hong Kong business boys who can't tell their ears from ther arseholes when it comes to Broadband.

Australia is much much much larger than Ireland, so surely it would be easier for us to do it... especially since we have half the work done with all of the MANS we have in place? and Considering that 45% of our population live withing 50km of Dublin.

So again, how can the Aussies do it, and we cant?

It is for this exact reason that in 8 years time investment will be heading twards Australias knowledge economy, and WE will be stuck in the stone age AND PROBABLY STILL IN A F****** RECESSION!

    :rant over: :P

We have a Lilliputian economy and numbers compared to other countries. And it will be VERY interesting to see if that Australian plan actually materialises.

    Australia is planning...

I think what you meant to say is that "an Australian politician is promising..."

    Slight difference there!

Australia for its vast size has got 90% of its population in less than 10 major urban areas. This leads to cheaper rollout of new products and technologies and good ROI for any company willing to spend the captial.

Meanwhile, Ireland is a tiny country but with its population spread out all over the land (lowest population density in Europe) leading to very expensive roll-out of new products and technologies with poor ROI.

The only way IMO that we will ever see 100MB broadband for all in this country is if we concentrate our small population in 5-6 urban areas and leave the countryside to farming and wind-farms..
