Change this thread from "Budget April 2009 as it happens" to "right wing views on social welfare"

Why? Agreeing with the fact that the country can no longer afford to give people on the dole a Christmas bonus?

Lol Xmas bonus on welfare, with a 20 billion deficit it is crazy to suggest it shouldn't go.

The cost of living has reduce slightly so save the money now for Xmas and you won't have any problems.

    I heard 25%!!!! Huge increase

    From rte twitter:

The price of cigarettes will rise by 25 cent and diesel goes up five cent a litre. The increases are VAT inclusive.

There will be a new scheme to allow civil servants over the age of 50 to retire. The scheme will begin in May. Those retiring will not be replaced unless sanctioned by the Department of Finance.

The income levy thresholds have been lowered, with the 2% rate kicking in at €15,000, 4% at €75,000 and 6% at €175,000.

Is the reduction in age of optional retirement for civil servants a bid to oust some of them nicely?

Ordinary shares will be taken in banks needing a bail out, that's a change from preference shares. Watch the Banks share price drop again.

This will be a lovely toxic pill either way (i.e. at market value it screws over the Irish as their tax money pays over price or it will topple the bank by buying at real value which is the whole issue in the first place forcing a nationalisation of the bank, want to guess which one I believe in?).

Whether it be 25% or 25c on cigarettes will not make much for revenue here, people will buy more up north.

Its 25% of the exise which isn't 25% of the cost of the cigarettes. I'd say it roughly equates to 10% overall

    Yep, that's what he said.
