Is there anyway to remove existing scratches on the glass? I have a feeling O2 are going to be a bit of a b#####over this and arent going to give me a new handset, so i can try the fix above???

    2 issues:

    1) how can i get the weather report on the front screen to auto-refresh?i have to go in and "refresh data" which is kind of pointless cause when i am in there i have already seen the updated weather report, this is very annoying
    2) why do i only have an Edge signnal on the phone my house? i am using o2 mobile broadband right now on my laptop with the sierra modem with 2 bars HSPA, doesnt make sense and also extrememly annoying

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

i gave up using online widgets on the homescreen, they drain too much battery and they use up data allowance.

if i want to know the weather or what's going on in facebook, i'll just open those apps and check.

Is use of the GPS free. I ask this because everytime I open the Map app it asks to go online. Will the GPS work over in the States or need to buy extra maps ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 498 ✭✭Pyro Boy

you don't need to go online for GPS , it can use the net if you want but you can change that option ... you can download maps for the States for free (all maps are free the navigation is what costs the money see the prices here

Thats grand. I will try turn the go online feature off. Where do I download maps for the States ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 498 ✭✭Pyro Boy

OK the settings to turn off the net are .... click maps>options>tools>settings>internet >Go online at start-up >No

Download the maps from here http://www.nokia.ie/explore-services/maps/download you might already have some of the steps done.

So if I download the maps to my phone it just saves on time as regards loading ? Did anyone else get a free 3 month trial with Eastern Europe & Balkans maps! I did and have no idea why but its in "my licenses".

I think if you don't download them you want be able to see the map without having an internet connection ..the loading times could improve cause you don't have to wait for them to download ... they are big files and takes a while to download (I've slow net)

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭redout

Just downloaded some maps. Having them downloaded lets you search them maps for whatever country you downloaded whilst offline. If offline then you cant look up say USA or France. Makes sense to download I suppose as it saves money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 442 ✭✭DRice

my widgets (except facebook) dont auto refresh, any ideas?

to get map data, you have two options.

    1. turn on your data connection and let the nokia maps application download the map data for your immediate area on the fly, which will take time over a slow connection and use up your data allowance in your home country and will cost you a small fortune if you are using data whilst roaming (i.e. not in your own country).

DO NOT underestimate the cost of roaming data charges. whilst the EU has been forcing mobile operators to bring down the cost of roaming calls (and possibly texts) you could be charged hundreds of euros for roaming mobile data charges. if you are out of your home country, stick to wifi.

    2. use nokia maps to download the maps your need from your pc at home or in the office and then use it to load them onto your phone via usb (bluetooth will be too slow so don't use that), thus saving you the costs associated with downloading them whilst you are away and costing you a small fortune.

it's a no brainer really. you have a phone with 32gb of online storage which you could use to download detailed maps of the entire world for free to use wherever and whenever you like and never even notice that they are there until you need them.

you'll get 3 months free navigation on the phone the first time you choose to use it, so make sure you pick a time when you really need to use it to take up nokia on the offer, unless you use the phone for business and don't pay for the bill, in which case you can use several premium rate sms messages to pay for it which will go on the bill. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭redout

The USA map is huge - nearly 1GB. Ireland is a paltry 17MB. Downloaded the US map earlier and got to 94% and the poxy wifi went dead....... Phone nearly ended up in wall. Definitely agree makes sense to download yourself instead of using a data connection.

Its just the navigation that costs is it? You can still view your current location on a the map for free is it ?

Yes the navigation is the only thing that costs :D so you can view your current location for FREE

Though their offer for pedestrian navigation in over 60 countries for €8.99 for 2 years sounds good..

was just about to post it, i thought I might be first. :)

just installed the new OVI v2 beta (v.good so far, much better than v1) and it was telling me that v12 of the n97 firmware is now available to me, but of course my microUSB is gone walkabout so i can't update (don't fancy trying over BT thanks very much!). :(

EDIT: just snaffled one off someone at work, so gonna give it a shot now in a couple of minutes, once it's re-installed the usb drivers.

oh, and mine's a UK model with the euro generic region code, so it should be available to anyone with the same config.

christ on a bike, i nearly shat one there. :(

I was in the middle of the firmware update on the phone and windows decides to ask if i want to "restart now" in the middle of me typing an email and not looking at the screen and it took my keypresses as a thumbs up to give me a heart attack.

purely by chance an app refused to shut down long enough to leave the shutdown sequence in a hung state long enough for the update to finish. the PC and the n97 shut down within seconds of each other.

I have a shortcut on my desktop with a "shutdown -a" command in it just for such an emergency, but by the tme i found it in amongst all the other desktop shortcuts it was too late.

literally just made it by the skin of my teeth.

too shaken to actually check and see whats new on the phone, just happy it's not a 600 euro brick at the moment. :(

updated about an hour ago and havent found a single difference.

infact i started getting that old blacklight not coming on issue again.

EDIT** doesnt seem to be happening, must of been just a lag issue after the update that was causing that glitch to happen again. still know sign of any difference though.

must just be a underline bug fix

Supposedly Nokia UK always check the FW themselves again before releasing it!

Ditto...but I'm sure they would never not release a full version unless it was seriously messed up, Nokia HQ wouldn't allow it! Atleast they're gradually getting there lol!
