Dublin / Cork theatre recommendations?

To my shame I'm not at all familiar with the world of theatre but now I've got a colleague coming to Ireland (Dublin and Cork) for his first visit soon and he's very interested in going to the theatre. Any recommendations please?

What kind of thing is he interested in? Maybe check out the websites for the various theatres - The Gate, The Abbey, The Gaiety, The Project and The Cork Opera House, The Granada Theatre (Cork), Everyman Palace (Cork).
