Ok, I feel like I should probably point out a couple of things at this point that might not have been made explicit already.

I'm not mod here for the long term, I'm here to help out for a little while cos Neil is busy and I have modding experience in a variety of forums. Yes, one of them was pro wrestling, but I also modded the nocturnal forum and stand up comedy at one stage, so please try not to focus on that too much folks or read too much into it cos it really is a null point.

I'm not here to lead or shape this community in any way, I am here to keep things nice and tidy for a while, that's pretty much it.

Hope that clears things up for people a bit.

But what I have a problem with is that people (MMA practitioners mostly from the old SD&MA forum) had hoped that splitting the forum like it is now would promote and advance MMA in Ireland as well as discuss various shows.
There's nothing to stop anybody doing this if they want.

But then we've the one or two Walter Mitty charactors here who'd rather we seen the UFC almost as an extention of pro-wrestling.
I'm not really following you here to be honest, can you give an a few examples of this?

And I could care less about Brock or another former pro-wrestling clown making the cross over to MMA (UFC mostly I guess) but...
Well the guy is the UFC's champion so I don't know if clown would be the right word.

In short, I don't think this forum does anything to promote MMA in this country, it could have been a fantastic Irish MMA discussion forum - but IMO and other's I speak with its failed.
If it has then I fail to see how this is the fault of the casual UFC fans who post here. The fighttalk forum is used by Irish MMA heads only and look at how busy that is. mmaireland.com used to have a forum, again it was used by Irish MMA people only and it died a dead.

I think that a non-issue is being made into an issue here. How can you just gloss over any pro wrestling involvement in MMA when just last week one of the best MMA shows of the year (DREAM 8) was headlined by two mediocre fighters (Minowa and Shibata) simply because they were pro wrestling stars? I'm not saying that it should be the main talking point, and it never has been apart from one thread, but some people seem to just want to ignore influences like that

There does seem to be a level of elitism from a few posters towards MMA fans who don't train in it. You've got to accept that the vast majority of MMA fans watch it for the simple entertainment, not the minute technical details

I'm just wondering how the forum could be a great place for Irish MMA discussion? Is there something preventing this?

If im not mistaking this forum does promote the local MMA does it not? If it doesnt do so to your satisfaction do something about it. Start threads or post about it.
MMA is entertainment. It is also fighting.
Why does somebody watch a fight whether they be a practioneer of MMA or not? To be entertained and appreciate the sport.

Is the boxing/soccer etc forums only full of posters who partake in that sport or can people who dont have a valid opinion on the sport? Of course they can.

Its simple people if you dont like the topic being discussed dont read it. But dont go in and start bitching and moaning about what is being discussed.
If you would like something to be discussed, lets say local MMA, post up something you want to discuss.
    Easy, no?

    .

This is a mainstream site, so in general there's a mainstream POV of MMA in this forum now. There are other forums like ringoftruth where users are predominantly involved in the domestic scene, but I don't think you can realistically expect the same from here.

IMHO the balance in discussion between mainstream (UFC, Ultimate fighter etc.) MMA and domestic MMA is pretty good and I for one have no problems with the content or the posters.

Forgotten about RoT. That's hardly the busiest forum either last time I checked.

There used be a time when there was loads of discussion after a Irish show, now there's hardly any. Don't know why, but I'm pretty sure it's not the fault of Joe Average UFC Fan.

Mairt, how exactly can you complain that: "In short, I don't think this forum does anything to promote MMA in this country, it could have been a fantastic Irish MMA discussion forum - but IMO and other's I speak with its failed."

I'm sorry man, you're a good contributor to this site, you seem like a decent bloke, and from what I've heard, you are, but c'mon. Throw us a bit of a bone here.

I logged in just now, and on the first page alone there are 9 threads which are in various shapes or forms, related to the Irish MMA scene. I train with a lot of lads who are actively involved in the Irish MMA scene and there are 2 stickies in this forum to aid posters in promoting the Irish scene. I have also gone out of my way with the Admins (who don't like people advertising clothing etc on the forum) to make sure that we are still allowed to promote seminars and events on the forum. Now, if you feel more could be done I am more than open to suggestion as I am all for using this forum as a vehicle to help the Irish scene. So throw me a PM if you have any ideas, I have no problem with that. The posters make the forum, if people don't contribute to the discussions on the Irish scene then what else exactly can we do?

The forum is open to whoever wants to use it. If those involved in the Irish MMA scene wish to use it for that then please continue to do so. What exactly do you want us to do? Like I said, events calendars, active roster lists, promotion of events and seminars. All of these things can be found on this forum. As far as I'm concerned, we've done everything in our power to try and accommodate the Irish scene. Maybe we could do some of these things differently (PM myself or dunkamania with suggestions, like I said, very open to ideas) but we are trying at least. Or is it just that there are many armchair MMA fans posting in here that annoys you?

How would this forum look if we amended the charter to say that "you must train and compete in MMA to post here". I'm fairly sure the admins would shut the forum down if we became that elitist. And to be fair, I don't want this forum to become some form of arsehole corner where people are too intimidated to post because every person in the forum questions their credentials. I'm fairly sure most posters don't wish to be elitist. Many many people post in the soccer forum, most don't play I'd bet, and yet "who do you play for, OMG what you don't play? Then GTFO" doesn't become the theme of every thread over there. Yea it'd be great if everyone who posted in here knew the technical intricacies of MMA (a lot do to be fair) but that is just unrealistic to expect. The sport is growing and as it does, more and more casual fans will arrive. To be honest, I think the exposure is great. MMA now feels much more like a "real" sport than it did 5-10 years ago.

Now don't get me wrong, the pro wrestling and MMA talk annoys me, for the simple reason that pro wresting is fake and MMA is a real sport where the two participants actually compete to find a conclusion as opposed to pre arrange their ending and work under a plan to entertain a crowd. What they have in common is how they are promoted. Pro wrestling, in my eyes, is not a sport, it is theatre/entertainment, while MMA is a competitive sport. So the promotion of it is where the comparison ends. Unfortunately for you and I, the UFC chose to target the same niches that the WWE appeals to, so we have to deal with many a pro wrestling fan also being a casual UFC/MMA (mainly UFC) fan. That's not a dig at pro wrestling btw (it is fake), it's an explanation of what I perceive the differences to be.

As regards orestes, again Mairt, I put the notice up in the moderators forum (which you have access to) that I needed an experienced mod to look help dunkamania after the forum while I'm away as I'm sure he doesn't want to be online 24-7 alone dealing with the forum. You could have volunteered if you wanted to? Any mods could have volunteered.....

Orestes was good enough to volunteer and hasn't come in under any pretenses of being an expert, and why should he. Many mods on this site mod forums of topics that don't interest them. Their job is to make sure the rules are followed and no porn/advertising/potentially libelous content is posted, they have no obligation to post or contribute to the forum. So it would be nice if people at least showed him a little respect. He's helping the forum out by stepping in to help ensure that no trolling idiots ruin the forum. I'm sure this thread is giving a great impression of this forum and the posters.
