We seperated Church and State long ago, so why are pubs still mandatorily closed on Christmas day and Good Friday?

Take a look at the constitution's preamble and you will see a pretty specific statement of each citizens "obligations to our Divine Lord, Jesus Christ" and you will see pretty quickly that we have never separated the two. Until all references of JC and pals, or even generic "God" beings are removed we will remain a non secular state.

Until we have a government system like that of France, who doesn't care what religion you are, providing you play by their rules; or Portugal, we are not secular. The Church still has it's mits on a lot of sections of society. As previous poster said, our Constitution says it all really.
