The Good the Bad and The Ugly would be my number 1. But the likes of Apocalypyo, Master and Commander, The Proposition, Zatoichi are worthy of consideration.

    The Matrix

I'm serious. It changed a generation, and it's ripples are still seen in media today.

    Best Movies Ever eh?
Well, without separating genres it's fairly difficult so I'll choose my favourites from a list of different genres.

Comedy: Planes,Trains and Automobile / My Cousin Vinny: Timeless classics.
    Drama: Shawshank Redemption
    Horror: The Ring/Aliens
    SciFi: The Fifth Element
    Action: True Lies
    Musical: Moulin Rouge
    Spoof: The Naked Gun
    Fantasy: Fellowship of the Rng
    Indie: Magnolia
Romance: Intolerable Cruelty (for me) - The Notebook (for the girls methinks)
Foreign: Life is Beautiful (La Vita e Belle) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
    Animation: The Incredibles / Beowulf
Comic book adaptation: The Dark Knight / V for Vendetta

Which genres am I missing here? Can I fit the Matrix in somewhere. Definitely deserves a mention. Blew me away completely.

Nobody has seen Ravenous then or this discussion wouldn't be happening. Hmmm must watch it again now.

Would second that. Watched it again the other day and it had the same impact as when I saw it the first time. Some of the scenes (Tuco running through the huge graveyard in search of Arch Stantons grave stands out) pack a real punch, maybe even more so when you consider it was made in 1966.

personally i think the good , bad and ugly is over rated , i think a few dollars more is a much better film

I'm surprised to hear that, I'd consider it the worst of the dollars trilogy, and put Fistful way above it.

But movies are a highly subjective thing I guess.

Casino is my personal favourite. Great acting, outstanding soundtrack and it looked spectacular. I know Goodfellas is considered Scorcese's masterpiece but I enjoyed this film more. And it has Joe Pesci in it which pretty much seals the deal.

+1 for internelligent mentioning My Cousin Vinny which is one of the best comedies ever.

I put up a list of movies already, but another one just came to mind. I checked it on imdb and I'm shocked its only at 7.7.

    Giant

    Great, great movie.

I can't believe The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford hasn't received a mention. An outstanding film in every way. Definitely a contender for the greatest film ever.

The Proposition is also excellent. Both these films portray life in the 19th century with the characters stories being set on the fringes of civilisation (literally and figuratively) and make for excellent viewing. I would highly recommend them.

I'll cast my vote for a film that everybody can enjoy, no matter what age. I've never met anyone who didn't think this film is awesome. Kids, teens, 20-something, adults, elderly, they all love...

    jurassic_park_ver2.jpg

Watched this film recently. It's still friggin' AWESOME. It's the posterboy for amazing blockbuster that everyone can enjoy. The story is so much fun, action, suspense, drama, comedy, wonder.....just brilliant.

"that everybody can enjoy, no matter what age"

That would have to be Back To The Future then.
Back to the Future is the closet you'll get to a perfect film,it's got all of the above and more.

It's far too hard to try and pin one film as the best. No matter what film people choose there's always going to be at least one person coming along to call it absolute ****e.

As far as popular opinion goes it seems to be this, but that's been panned already on this thread.

I don't think anyone would have a bad word to say about Jurassic Park or BTTF1, so i'd put them on the shortlist for candidates for best film ever.

Shawshank splits audiences. I personally don't think it is that interesting; I didn't care for the plight of the protagonists, and i'd imagine kids and teens wouldn't appreciate it...but everyone loves JP and BTTF.

I want to smack people in the face when they say their favourite film is shawshank redemption.

I want to smack people in the face who get upset when others express an opinion that doesn't conform to theirs

    The Karate Kid?

I like it, but it's clearly not the best movie ever...
