O2 have introduced a call set up charge of 5C on ALL calls including voicemail for their pre pay customers from 11th May 2009.

Another sly price hike as part of O2's expensive pre pay offering.

    Source: http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/connect/O2/About+O2/Terms+and+Conditions/Customer+Notification/
O2 wishes to advise all Prepay customers, that effective from 11 May 2009, the 7c minimum call charge for calls to national mobiles, landlines and voicemail will be replaced with a 5c call set-up charge*, inclusive of VAT.

The 5c charge is replacing the 7c charge so it makes it 2cent cheaper

Its free on certain packages. 5c start better then 7c. Gotta make money somehow!

With this change the cost of there calls with a 20e top up is the exact same as 3 perhaps this is what they are up too? Fair play anyway they seem to be the onlyones doin anything with there pre pay price plan to bring down costs.

You should probably edit the thread title because they're actually reducing their charge and not introducing one

There are two totally different things.

The 7 cent charge was a minimum charge.

The 5 cent charge is a set up charge for almost every call.

    Example 1

If you had a 30 second call to your voicemail you were previously charged for 30 seconds or at least 7c.

You are now charged for 30 seconds AND a extra 5 cent charge per call.

    Example 2

If you have a one minute chat to someone you were previously just charged for the one minute conversation.

You are now charged for the one minute call AND the "set up charge".

Again, this is a new charge that will milk people to a greater extent than the minimum charge.

Almost every call you make will now be 5c per call more expensive.

"7c minimum call charge for calls to national mobiles, landlines and voicemail will be replaced with a ... "

So.. short calls will now cost 5c, which is 2c cheaper, and longer calls will cost 5c more.. ?

    It's pretty sneaky.

So its now 12c to start a call? On top of the prices as is?

    Seems not.

Is Vodafones 9c charge the same as this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭JTMan

No, Vodafone's charge is a minimum charge not a charge per call "set up" like "milk 'em" O2.

is this part of some long term plan to make prepaid suck like it does in north america? soon you will have to pay to receive calls / let someone else's phone ring

It says all prepay customers excluding all calls to O2 numbers on O2 Experience Plus, 10 Nominated Numbers on O2 Favourites and 3 Nominated Numbers on o2 Friends.

    Where to?

    Voda 9cent
    Meteor 9cent
    Three 5cent
    Tesco 20cent

You could switch to o2 clear plans and not have to pay the setup charges.

receiving calls uses up credit over there on prepaid unless you get some weird package. so does leaving the phone ring on some networks anyway

it smells like a big conspiracy to get people onto bill paid so soon everyone will have locked phones and 2 year contracts and the problem of 'churn' will be gone

Well the clear sim and 'lite' options are still there. 30 days notice is not bad. They do need to get people back to bill pay though

O2 have a set up charge the other networks have a minimum call charge the difference between these has been clearly explained near the beginning of this thread.
